Product DetailsIf you collected cards in the early 1990s, chances are you have a stack of 1991 Upper Deck Baseball tucked away somewhere. Some might even have a corner of their garage dedicated to the product. The bad news: you're not going to put your kids through college off of them. You probably won't be able to but a term's worth of text books. The good news: 1991 Upper Deck Baseball is another in a line of attractive, high-quality base sets from the card maker. Show
The set includes a total of 800 cards. The first 700 are considered the Low Series. Numbers 701-800 make up the High Series, which was released later in the season. Card fronts continue the "around the diamond" theme that started with 1989 Upper Deck Baseball. The white borders have a base line running down the left side, turning in on the name plate alone the bottom. Clean but complex, it's a great way to showcase the stellar photography the flagship brand was a staple in Upper Deck's flagship brand. Card backs have a second image as well as stats. 1991 Upper Deck Baseball has a couple of key rookie cards. They're led by Chipper Jones and Jeff Bagwell, two of the greatest hitters of their generation. Others include Mike Mussina and Luis Gonzalez. One of the most famous cards in 1991 Upper Deck Baseball doesn't feature a baseball player, at least he wasn't one at the time. The Michael Jordan SP1 features the basketball Hall of Famer taking a cut in batting practice with the Chicago White Sox. It caused quite the frenzy when it came out and was treated like a trophy among those who got one. The Baseball Heroes line of inserts that started in 1990 Upper Deck Baseball High Series continues. 1991 Upper Deck Baseball Low Series packs dared collectors to "Find the Nolan." Career highlights of the pitching great were spotlighted on nine Baseball Heroes inserts. The final card also had an autographed version that's limited to 2,500 copies. A similar approach was taken in High Series packs with Hank Aaron. Every Low Series jumbo pack has a Silver Sluggers insert, which celebrates the most powerful hitters. Heroes of Baseball honors Hall of Fame inductees Harmon Killebrew, Fergie Jenkins and Gaylord Perry. Each has their own card, are together on a painted header and have an autograph that's limited to 3,000 copies each. Like virtually every set released at the time, 1991 Upper Deck Baseball cards aren't worth much today. Unless you find the needle in the wax haystack and actually "Find the Nolan" or "Find the Hank" autographs. Cards that once sold for solid amounts, like the Michael Jordan baseball card, no longer gather much interest. Everyone who wants one, has (at least) one it seems. Both Low and High Series boxes have 36 packs. Low Series packs have cards 1-700. High Series packs add the final 100 cards to the mix, but also have early cards as well. There's also a factory set that has all 800 cards. But that's not to say this isn't a great set. The checklist is expansive, the images are fantastic and the quality is high. 1991 Upper Deck Baseball is a set that's easy to enjoy in every way except monetary value.
