This video shows you how to add transmission fluid to your 2010 Mazda 6. Before adding transmission fluid, make sure that your engine was running when you checked the fluid level. If the transmission fluid level on your 6 is low, you need to add fluid through the dipstick tube. Mazda has been developed sophisticated transmissions through years and it is critical that you add the exact type of transmission fluid stipulated by your owner's manual (typically in the back of the manual in a section titled Fluid Capacities.) When adding transmission fluid to your 6, be sure to add it slowly as the transmission fluid capacity is reached quickly and it is difficult to remove excess fluid if you overfill.

If you are having problems with the transmission in your 6, such as clunky shifting or hesitation, check the fluid level first - it is amazing how many drivers pay thousands of dollars for transmission work when a half quart of transmission fluid would have fixed the problem.

How Often Do You Need to Change Your Mazda’s Transmission Fluid?

2011 mazda 6 transmission fluid change
You probably know by now how often you should be changing the oil in your Mazda, but what about the transmission fluid? Well, there’s a good chance the answer is “never.”

Or, at least, almost never. If you purchased your Mazda new and it is equipped with SKYACTIV® TECHNOLOGY, it will have lifetime transmission fluid that only requires changing should a critical component or the whole transmission need to be replaced. If you have one of the newer models produced in the last few years, there’s a good chance it has SKYACTIV® TECHNOLOGY, but be sure to contact us if you’re unsure.

So, what do you do if your Mazda does not have SKYACTIV® TECHNOLOGY? Although there’s a good chance your transmission still won’t require regular maintenance, you’ll want to check the owner’s manual to be sure or get in touch with us/professional Mazda service technicians, as some Ford-sourced products like the Mazda Tribute (or other models) will actually require transmission fluid changes regularly. That said, if you’ve already done some inspecting and have noticed the fluid is dark, dirty or smells bad, it’s a good idea to schedule an appointment to have it inspected.

Hopefully you now know if you need to change the transmission fluid in your Mazda, but if you’re still unsure or if you can’t find the information in your owner’s manual, just let us know. Don’t forget to check back to the Mazda of Lodi blog for more about life with your Mazda.
