What Type of Fuel Does the Mazda CX-5 Crossover Take?

Depending on which model you drive, power for the 2021 Mazda CX-5 comes from either the standard SKYACTIV®-G 2.5L or the SKYACTIV®-G 2.5L Dynamic Pressure Turbo engine. The Mazda CX-5 does not require premium gas, but Mazda still recommends using premium 93 octane fuel on models with the turbocharged engine in order to get the best performance. This guide offers a more thorough look at which 2021 Mazda CX-5 trim levels require premium gas and which do not.

Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring

If you own a CX-5 Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring model, you should be using regular unleaded gasoline at the pump. The SKYACTIV®-G 2.5L engine featured on these trim levels earns up to 187 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque. Accidently using premium probably won’t cause any damage to your vehicle, but it won’t provide any boost in fuel economy or performance either.

Grand Touring Reserve and Signature

Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring Reserve and Signature models are upgraded to a SKYACTIV®-G 2.5L Dynamic Pressure Turbo Engine. With this engine, Mazda recommends filling up with premium 91 octane gasoline. Using regular unleaded gas will not harm your vehicle, but it will curb performance a bit while your car is running on that fuel type.

Carbon Edition

The Carbon Edition model is the only version of the 2021 Mazda CX-5 that can be found with both the standard SKYACTIV®-G 2.5L engine and the SKYACTIV®-G 2.5L Dynamic Pressure Turbo. Premium fuel is recommended only for Carbon Edition models equipped with the turbocharged engine. If you’re unsure which engine you have, check for a “TURBO” badge on the trunk lid. If the “SKYACTIV®-G” badge stands alone, you have the base engine and should use regular unleaded fuel only.

It requires regular gas or premium gas? Dose regular gas will damage? I’m new Mazda CX-5 owner, so I do not know much about the car..

level 1

Regular gas for nonturbo. Turbo is ok for either gas.

level 2

it’s skyactive-g 2.5L engine .. is it turbo?

level 1

Your model isn’t turbo so it gets regular gas

level 1

I have noticed a slight loss of power with regular 87 compared to 91. But it runs on both either way. These skyactive engines are quite sensitive to the octane ratings. The manufacturer does recommend 91 for best performance.

level 2

Only the turbo models is premium gas recommended. The regular engine won’t use the extra octane.

Inb4 „subjectively mine runs better with…“ Oh… too late…

level 1

I have 5000 miles on my 2022 signature and I only use 91 octane however a couple of weeks ago I decided to try 87 and I was even more disappointed because I got 15.2 mpg for 2 weeks and I felt the slight power reduction‼️ for some reason I only get 19.2-19.8mpg with 91 and I’m going crazy here, take a look at my previous posts.

You should try looking into e30. I have not done the research for this car yet but 04 wrx loves it. No hit to mpg and much better idle and low end torque
