If it’s your favorite place to shop, we get it, because it’s our favorite, too. One drawback to Costco is you have to have a membership card to pay for all those items you just loaded up in your cart. And if you left your card at home, you might have to stand in line at the membership desk or, worse, make a trip back home.

Costco decided to change their membership game. Your weekly grocery haul just got a whole lot easier.

Your Costco Membership Card Is Now Digital

Say goodbye to the days of tearing your wallet apart in search of that pesky Costco membership card. The bulk retailer has officially made the digital shift, so your membership card is now accessible from your phone.

Now you can enter the store and pay for your items by flashing your mobile screen just like you would with your Starbucks Rewards at the coffee shop.

When the news dropped on Instagram last year, dedicated shoppers flocked to the comments section to ask Costco about the new feature. The digital membership card can’t be used at the gas pump, and the feature is only active in the U.S. and Canada for the time being.

Here’s how to make the most out of your Costco membership.

How to Download Your Digital Membership Card

Getting started is actually pretty easy. Just go to the app store on your iPhone or Android device and download the Costco app. After that, all you need to do is log in to your Costco.com account and enter the numbers on your card. Once you’ve done that, you can get shopping!

Roll up to the register and show the QR code to your cashier to get paying for your goodies. Just make sure you don’t break these unspoken grocery store rules.

You can add a Costco Card to Apple Wallet, but you may have a bit of a difficult time using it to enter the store and at checkout. That’s because warehouse staff need to see the information on the card when you enter the location, including your headshot and membership level. These details are not stored in Apple Wallet: All that’s carried over is the barcode that’s scanned at checkout and the account number.

Still, if you want to store your Costco Card in Apple Wallet so you have instant access to your membership number should you need to recite it for whatever reason or use it to checkout online, we have the instructions below.

Instructions

Head into the App Store and download Pass2U Wallet.
Tap the menu icon in the top-left corner of the application and select Pass Store.
Search for 'Costco' and select the Pass created by Fredrick Newson, then tap Apply.
Fill in all of the requested information, using your phone's camera to scan the barcode.
When you're finished, click the Done icon in the top-right corner.
Wait a moment for the Pass to be generated, then click Add.

Of course, you don’t need to use Fredrick Newson’s template. You can create your own, or there are plenty of others available from the Pass Store. The reason we recommend this one is because it has room for all of the information on your Costco Card you can possibly store in Apple Wallet. In the same way you can’t store photographs in Apple Wallet, you can’t copy over a headshot in a way that’ll be accepted at the store.

A few questions. I am switching to Apple Wallet as much as possible, a case with slots for my minimal amount of cards I will carry, but Costco doesn't allow its membership card to be in Apple Wallet.

Why won't Costco allow membership card in Apple Wallet? On their website they say "The Digital Membership Card is designed to offer members advanced features and will not be available in Apple Wallet." What advanced features are these? And as follow up, why could those features not work in Apple Wallet? If anyone knows.
As opposed to pulling up the Costco app, can I just show my Costco Citi card in Apple Wallet to get in? In Apple Wallet it does not indicate that it is a Costco Card. Can I scan my Citi card at the register as my membership card? Or do I need to pull up Costco app?
