Can I Take Probiotics When On Antibiotics?

advanced2019-04-08T02:32:20+00:00

If you need to take antibiotics, you need to realize that antibiotics kill off infectious agents but they also kill off good, healthy bacteria.

Initially it was believed that you don’t take probiotics while on antibiotics because the antibiotics will kill off any of the healthy bacteria of the probiotic and offset any of the positive effects of taking a probiotic, so people were told not to take probiotics with antibiotics.

Further research has shown that if you take probiotics at a different time than the antibiotics, the probiotics will help to maintain and replenish the good, healthy bacteria in the gut and diminish the amount of die off of the healthy bacteria. Therefore you can take antibiotics and probiotics on the same day, just at different times, separated by at least an hour.

What happens if you take a probiotic and an antibiotic at the same time?

Doctors who recommend probiotics typically suggest that people take them a few hours after their antibiotic. Otherwise, the two medications can cancel each other out. Some doctors even suggest waiting to start probiotics until a few days after you've completed your course of antibiotics.

How many hours apart should you take antibiotics and probiotics?

You want to start taking a probiotic the same day you start taking an antibiotic, but not at the same time. A quick rule of thumb is to take your probiotic two hours before or two hours after taking your antibiotic. This will give sufficient time for the antibiotic to work while not killing off the beneficial bacteria.

Should you take probiotics or antibiotics first?

Take Probiotics at a Convenient Time Some would recommend taking probiotics at least two hours before or after antibiotics to reduce the potential for the antibiotic to kill the probiotic you just took. You can do this if you want, but if that makes your medication schedule too complicated, just take them together.
