Welcome to the Excellence Club Two Story Rooftop Terrace Suite with Plunge Pool and Ocean View at Excellence El Carmen! We stayed in room #5252 at the all-inclusive Excellence El Carmen resort in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic in June of 2021. We had an amazing stay, and this suite is one of my all-time favorite resort rooms. As the name suggests, this suite is a whopping 1600sf and features two full levels of living space. The main floor is comprised of an open-concept living & bedroom area, walk-in closet, restroom, balcony, and indoor/outdoor jacuzzi. The view from this suite is comprised of the resort ground, main pool & restaurant, and a partial ocean view. Next to the front door is a room service box, so you can accept your room service deliveries and leave dirty dishes for housekeeping without ever having to interact with a human. The walk-in closet is large and contains built-ins for great organization. Included was a safe, a beach bag, two cozy robes, and some spare towels. The bathroom is open concept, with double sinks, plenty of counter space, and a vanity area. There is also a separate water closet. The shower is a large walk-in with both a rain shower and a handheld shower head. One thing I found hilarious is that there is a landline phone in the bathroom. Not sure why?! Moving onto the bedroom, there is a super comfy king-sized bed with two nightstands and lamps. The bed was so comfortable and we slept amazing! The living area contains an L-shape couch, TV, desk, and mini-bar/mini-fridge. There is a small coffee machine as well. The mini-fridge contains beers, mixers, and waters that are replenished daily. One of the best perks of Excellence El Carmen is that your suite will have four to five full-size liquor bottles at no cost to you! Excellence El Carmen Two Story Rooftop Terrace – Main Floor Balcony & JacuzziThe balcony has a small table and chairs with a great view of the center of the resort. The views include the resort ground, the main pool, the main restaurant, and a partial view of the ocean. We ate room service breakfast on our balcony every single morning. The best part of the main level is hands down the jacuzzi tub! The jacuzzi tub also offered these same great views, and was more than enough room for both of us to relax in. We took a bubble bath almost every night. There are privacy curtains that you can pull down as well. A word of caution: At night there is an automatic light on the balcony that is on a timer and shuts off just past midnight. If you are in the tub at night, literally *everyone* can see you. Use the privacy curtains! Excellence El Carmen Two Story Rooftop Terrace – Rooftop Deck with Plunge PoolThe highlight of this room is the massive rooftop deck. The rooftop deck has the same view of the resort grounds and partial ocean view from a higher vantage point. The space spans the entire length and width of your suite, so it’s a really good sized rooftop. There is a large outdoor couch and ottoman to relax on, as well as a lounge bed, outdoor shower, and plunge pool. I will note the wood planks by the plunge pool area were a bit warped. However, this was not surprising given the intense heat shining on it day after day. The plunge pool is about waist deep and slightly larger than a hot tub. It is a cool pool with no jets or heat. In the heat of June, it made the rooftop bearable! Because of the rooftop deck is on the top floor of each building, this means your suite will always be located on the third floor. There is both stair and elevator access to your suite, and then a flight of stairs to your rooftop. Please take care on the stairs up to your rooftop if you are wet or have been drinking! Excellence El Carmen Two Story Rooftop Terrace – The ViewThe Ocean View rooms looked over the center of the resort, including the main pool and outdoor restaurant. The ocean view was angled, but we weren’t missing out on much of the ocean view due to it being Sargassum seaweed season during our stay. The sunsets were gorgeous and the lighted pools made the night time view so cool. It was also a great place to watch the nighttime entertainment without having to leave our room. Ocean View vs. Ocean Front?When we booked our trip, we had to make a decision about the view. Should we choose the ocean view rooftop suite or the ocean front rooftop suite at a higher cost? Was it worth it to pay more for an ocean front view? As it turned out, the rooftop suites with the ocean view that we stayed in (left) offers more privacy from your next-door neighbors versus the ocean front rooftop suites (below, top floor). Even though we were not ocean front, I really enjoyed the view of our room and felt it was an excellent view for the price. Additionally, since it was Sargassum seaweed season during our visit, I don’t think an ocean view would have been as nice. The Excellence Club at Excellence El CarmenThe Excellence Club is the resort’s upgraded room and service category. Most room types are available in the standard and Excellence categories, with the Excellence Club offering more premium views an additional service perks. If you are staying in one of the two-story rooftop suites, the Excellence Club upgrade will afford you the partial or full ocean view. The standard non-Excellence Club two story rooms are at the back of the property with a garden view. However, in my opinion, you don’t need to have the Excellence Club to have a fantastic time at this resort. My recommendation is only select the Excellence Club if the room type and view is important to you. Otherwise, I think you are fine to skip it. What did it cost?I’m sure you’re wondering what a stay in such an upgraded suite cost! Considering what a cool room we had, I felt the price was extremely reasonable – especially when comparing the rooms you can get at other resort brands for the same price! I found that many other brands’ entry level room compared to what we paid for our stay in the two story suite. On average, the Excellence Club Two Story Rooftop Suites run around $450-$600/night depending on time of year and specials. The standard version of this suite with garden view runs around $350-$500/night. This rate is all-inclusive, so the rate covers your selected room as well as all the food, drink, and alcohol (including room service). We booked our five night stay in our Excellence Club Two-Story Rooftop Suite directly with the resort. This rate included the free transfer, and I also opted to pay a little more to make the trip refundable should we need to cancel (as June is the start of hurricane season). The grand total was $2200 or $1100 per person. Our airfare total was $1200, and we also spent $100 in cash on tips. This put the total cost of our trip with airfare at $3500.
