Interested in becoming a Corrections Officer at the Harford County Detention Center? This training course, provided by the Harford County Sheriff’s Office, includes introductory public safety training, background checks, information about the job, and an overview of the Detention Center. Successful completers are guaranteed an interview for employment as a correctional officer. The training is paid for by the Harford County Sheriff’s Office.

Classes will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays, September 6-29.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, approximately 35,700 openings for correctional officers and bailiffs are projected each year over the next decade. The EPICENTER’s Before and After School Care program provides a structured rhythm of games, learning, and activities that allows for more than just fun and friendships. We also invest in homework help, character building, and work through emotions, caring for the children and their families. Our ZONE program is offered at both our Edgewood and Aberdeen locations.

As summer begins to wrap up, we’re ready to jump into the school year offering the best care around. If you want a fun, loving program at one of the lowest costs, come join us this fall!

Leader and veteran birder, Dennis Kirkwood, will take you for a two mile walk along the Falling Branch Trail. Enjoy the beautiful rolling hills, farmland and country scenery as you walk between these two iconic nature sites in northern Harford County. Sam Robinson sees many exciting parallels between his life and that of Harvey Ladew. In addition to gardening, Harvey Ladew loved horses, fox hunting, travel, the arts, and socializing. Sam is well known for his scenes of timber racing, fox chasing, and local landscapes. Ladew’s beautiful gardens, as well as gardens created by Sam’s wife Barbara, and scenes from their travels are also favorite motifs. Additionally, Sam paints luscious interiors, dynamic gatherings and portraits. We are thrilled to have Sam with us at Ladew this year and look forward to seeing all those things that Harvey loved celebrated in paint.

Sam’s beautiful paintings are characterized by a fluent painterly realism. Gouache is one of his favorite mediums. Portable and quick, it makes up most of his direct work done from life. Oils are his primary medium for larger studio work.

Join us for our current exhibit, Calling Aberdeen Home: The Richard Morton Art Show. Richard Morton’s artwork is available for sale, and all proceeds benefit the Museum. This show features artwork depicting Aberdeen’s historic homes by the late Aberdeen artist Richard Morton, a locally and nationally acclaimed watercolorist. His artwork is displayed alongside historic artifacts from Aberdeen homes and artwork from members of the Aberdeen Boys and Girls Club as we consider what it means to call Aberdeen “home” today. Calling Aberdeen Home will be on view through Fall, 2022 during normal Museum open hours.

The Upper Chesapeake Chorus is a women’s a cappella chorus singing 4 part harmony! We welcome visitors to our weekly rehearsals. Come join a dynamic, diverse, enthusiastic group of women who excel at their craft. We sing at community venues throughout the Harford/Cecil County area including summer concerts, Bel Air Arts Festival, holiday events and private gatherings. We also compete annually in the Mid-Atlantic region where we have been past champions! Currently we are the 2nd place small chorus and 4th overall. Join us for a guided hike, but on the water in a canoe! This canoe trip is designed to acquaint participants with the natural surroundings of Deer Creek. Exploration of the environment is enhanced by the use of canoes to travel along the creek. The emphasis, during these relaxed excursions, is on environmental education and interpretation, provided by the naturalist who accompanies the group. Here is Rydell High’s senior class of 1959: duck-tailed, hot-rodding “Burger Palace Boys” and their gum-snapping, hip-shaking “Pink Ladies” in bobby sox and pedal pushers, evoking the look and sound of the 1950s in this rollicking musical. Head “greaser” Danny Zuko and new (good) girl Sandy Dumbrowski try to relive the high romance of their “Summer Nights” as the rest of the gang sings and dances its way through such songs as “Greased Lightnin’,” “It’s Raining on Prom Night,” and “Alone at the Drive-In Movie.”

You will learn how to properly strike and defend from those same strikes, escape body/clothing grabs, protect yourself if taken to the ground, and more.

Once a year, the Jellicle Cats come out to play on the night of the Jellicle Ball, when Elliot’s feline characters The Rum Tum Tugger, Skimbleshanks, Macavity, Jennyanydots, Mungojerrie, Rumpleteaser, Gus, Grizabella and others sing their stories for Old Deuteronomy who will determine which cat deserves to ascend to the Heavyside Layer and return in a new Jellicle life. Essential tremor (ET) is a neurological condition that mostly causes a rhythmic trembling of the hands while performing a task such as eating, writing, dressing, drinking or when holding a posture such as with the arms outstretched in front of the body. The tremor can also affect the head, voice, legs and trunk. More people are affected by these tremors than by Parkinson Disease and our group helps to educate, commiserate and increase awareness of this disorder. Please join us for discussions and possibly a guest speaker. Family members and caregivers are also invited.

The Harford County Health Department is partnering with 4 Paws Spa and Training Center, Inc. to offer low cost rabies vaccinations in support of World Rabies Day.

The clinic is available for dogs, cats, and ferrets that are at least 3 months of age. The cost is $8 per animal. Cash or check will be accepted at the clinic at the time of vaccination. Checks must be made payable to Harford County Rabies Clinics. All residents wishing to vaccinate their pet(s) must schedule an appointment in advance of the clinic. Walk in customers are not able to be seen.

Only pets under the control of responsible persons may be brought to the clinic. Dogs should be on a leash. Cats and ferrets should be secured within cages. No animals other than dogs, cats, and ferrets will be vaccinated.

Designed with producer interests in mind, this 2-day grazing school will offer a more in-depth education on pasture and grazing management. The course features multiple hands-on exercises to provide participants with opportunities to work with grazing tools and fencing materials. Topics covered will include forage selection, pasture assessment, grazing management, pasture allocation, fencing and watering options, extending the grazing season, and more! Black Root Underground is a popular, high-energy band from Baltimore that fuses hip hop, funk, jazz, blues, reggae, and spoken word. They are known for the inclusiveness of their lively, participation-based performances.

The band, formed in 2014, reflects the influence of legendary performers such as James Brown, George Clinton, and Bob Marley. Their new CD is called “Root Canal.”

The band members play multiple instruments and are multi-talented. Lead vocalist Black Root contributed a song to 123 Andrés Grammy-nominated CD, “Activate.”

On Saturday, Oct. 1, SIAB representatives will officially announce the debut of the largest event in the organization’s history to date: the three-day Maryland Italian Festival, scheduled for Sept. 29 through Oct. 1, 2023. This event, the largest Italian festival in Maryland, celebrates the beginning of National Italian-American Heritage Month and coincides with the 10th anniversary of SIAB and Harford County’s Sestercentennial (250th anniversary) celebrations in 2023. To celebrate the announcement of the festival, SIAB will host a ribbon cutting with the singing of the Italian and American national anthems, in addition to a toast officially welcoming Harford County as the home of The Maryland Italian Festival, followed by the rolling of the first bocce ball to open this year’s tournament.

On Saturday, Oct. 1, 32 participating bocce teams will compete on four temporary courts in double-elimination style play for cash prizes of $800 for first place, $600 for second and $400 for third.

On Sunday, Oct. 2, members of the public are invited to witness Special Olympics athletes and partners from Harford County and Baltimore City compete. This competition helps the athletes prepare for the Maryland State Games in June 2023 and possibly qualify for the USA Games to be held in 2026 in Minnesota. In June of this year, a Harford County Olympian went to the USA Games in Orlando and returned with two gold and one silver medals.

Tickets for the 2022 Bocce Tournament and Family Picnic are $10 for one-day or $15 for two-day admission. Participation in the tournament is $200 per four-person team ($50 per person), which includes admission. Team registrations and tournament admission tickets are available through website.

Nationally acclaimed, award-winning, Baltimore-born artist, painter, muralist, and educator Ernest Shaw Jr. paints narrative portraits of notable Black figures on canvas and community walls to depict and celebrate the impact of Black culture in America. His mission is to use his art to tell stories that challenge stereotypes and misconceptions about Black people, particularly Black men. He has been lauded for the huge, colorful murals adorning several buildings in Baltimore neighborhoods, celebrating and documenting history, culture, and community.

From 10am to 11:30am, Mr. Shaw will conduct a workshop on portraiture, centering around the process of drawing, contour, and continuous line drawing. Through portraiture, participants will use continuous line drawing to draft self-portraits that exhibit the contour and nature of the subject. This workshop is geared to novice artists and experienced artists of all ethnicities.

From 1pm to 2:30pm, Mr. Shaw will provide a fascinating lecture and slide presentation about his remarkable life and amazing career and the people, incidents, and experiences that have inspired and influenced his work.

Ernest Shaw Jr. received his BFA from Morgan State University in 2001 and his MFA from Howard University in 2005. Numerous awards include the RUBY Artist Award, Robert W. Deutsch Foundation (2017); the Baker Artist Award (2021); and the Mary Sawyers Imboden Prize/Baker Artist Recipient (2022). Mr. Shaw has done solo and group exhibitions in Baltimore, in Anne Arundel County, and at the Ohio State University. His famous murals adorn buildings in Baltimore, Atlanta, New York, Newark NJ, and Colombia.

A busy actor, director, spokesperson and teacher, Neill Hartley earned a Master of Fine Arts from Temple University in Acting. A faculty member of Temple University from 1989-2000 and on the faculty of the University of the Arts since 1994, Neill is much in demand as a speech and dialect coach for several professional theaters. He is a much sought-after actor, performing with companies that include the Arden Theater, Interact Theatre, and the Philadelphia Shakespeare Festival. Neill is also a busy director for theaters that include Philadelphia Young Playwrights, University of the Arts, University of Pennsylvania, Arcadia University, Isis Productions, the Brick Theater and the Luna Theater. He serves as Artistic Director for Acting Without Boundaries, a theater company providing large-scale musical opportunities for physically-disabled teens and young adults.

Our keynote event, the Hoppy Hustle, is a charity pub crawl styled event in the heart of Capitol Waterfront neighborhood of Washington, DC. Join us and our community partners as we kick off Homelessness Awareness Month with Off the Streets– A Sleep Out in support of our neighbors experiencing homelessness. This event is not about pretending to be homeless, it’s a demonstration to those experiencing homelessness that we cannot stay indoors while so many remain outside. We challenge YOU — friends, families, colleagues, churches, youth groups and organizations — to sleep on Leidos Field for this one night. Funds and awareness raised will help our mission to assist families with children and individuals experiencing homelessness achieve independence.

Come out for the sleepout and enjoy the Cowboy Eats food truck, a Kid Zone, DJ, movie on the big screen, homelessness awareness, and more!

$25 – Adults (ages 23+);

For beginners. These sessions are meant to help women, of any age (14+) or disposition feel confident in themselves.

Fan favorites, Tommy and Saundra O’Sullivan, return to Deer Creek Coffeehouse. Acclaimed as a “stellar guitarist” and “one of the great contemporary folk voices of Ireland”, Tommy O’Sullivan has remained one of the hidden treasures of traditional Irish music for many years. He has toured throughout North America and Europe, appearing at many major venues and festivals. Tommy has always kept an active recording schedule having recorded three albums as a member of Sliabh Notes and a duet album with Bothy Band piper, Paddy Keenan as well as two solo albums ‘Legacy’ and ‘Song Ablaze and most recently a duet album, “Safe Home” with his wife, Saundra. In 2011, they opened O’Sullivan’s Courthouse Pub in Dingle which has gained a reputation for world class traditional Irish music. In 2015, National Geographic cited O’Sullivan’s Courthouse Pub as the go-to pub for traditional Irish music on Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way. The Deer Creek crowd is known for its sing-along to the O’Sullivans’ cover of “The Galway Shawl”.

Christmas Concert featuring the world-renowned singer/songwriter, Charlie Zahm. Charlie is one of the most popular soloists at Celtic music festivals, Maritime, Early American music and Country Crossover events anywhere east of the Mississippi. With a baritone voice some have described as “coming along once in a generation,” Charlie has become one of the most successful performers on the Celtic festival circuit, weaving magical moments of Scottish and Irish history for the listener and viewer, with passion for the performance and a chosen repertoire pleasing to all members of the family.

Charlie will be accompanied by “Fiddler” Tad Marks; who has toured extensively across the U.S. and Europe with top-name groups and is considered one of the finest fiddlers on the East Coast.

On guitar is Steve Hobson whose talent is incredible to behold. He adds such a rich tone to the accompaniment. Steve has his own band, “Sin City Band” who plays throughout the area and has several CD’s on the market.

The City of Aberdeen will be celebrating Christmas Street festivities all day starting with a breakfast at Grace United Methodist Church on West Bel Air Avenue, a Craft Show at the Fire House on Rogers Street and the Christmas Street Parade down West Bel Air Avenue starting at 3pm.

Come over to the Church following the Parade. Refreshments will be available before the Concert from 5:30 until 6:30pm, and again during the intermission. The Concert starts at 7pm at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. Refreshments will include our now famous Crab Soup, Chicken Noodle Soup and Louisiana Jambalaya. Enjoy our Traditional Family Christmas drink of Warm Christmas Wassail. There is no better way to start off your Christmas Season. Proceeds from this event will be used to purchase gifts for local children who would otherwise not have any Christmas Gifts this year.

The Hiplet Ballerinas are a performance group based out of the Chicago Multi-Cultural Dance Center in the USA.

Hiplet™ fuses classical pointe technique with African, Latin, Hip-Hop and urban dance styles that are rooted in communities of color. It was specifically designed to make ballet accessible to all, by mixing it with current popular songs that will be familiar to audiences who don’t normally attend ballet performances.

Performances may incorporate the rhythms of African drums with Tchaikovsky, arabesques and beat-boxing or even Tango en pointe – all while showcasing Hiplet’s trademark sass, hip movements, and struts against popular music that audiences will recognize from Black Violin to Beyonce and Prince.

Partnerships with Mercedes Benz, New York and Paris Fashion Week, Versace, and Old Navy have culminated in an incredible worldwide demand for Hiplet’s live shows.
