My wife and I are on our honeymoon traveling across the United States. We are currently in Montana and out of nowhere it feels like somebody took a padded baseball bat and knocked me in the back of the head. I have A badd neck as it is and they're wanting to do a level one fusion on my neck. This does not help at all lots of pain at this point. Thank God I was in the passenger seat. I got light headed and currently my neck is absolutely killing me. It appears this head rest had deployed somehow. Any recommendations on what I need to do or why this happened. Again we were just driving ,nothing out of the ordinary and I'm in the passenger seat and this head rest deployed and KNOCKED the ever loving fool out of the back of my head. I currently have a headache, neck pain and neck strain. Any advice or help would be appreciated.

Never heard of them deploying randomly on a WK2 Grand Cherokee before. See a dealer for the headrest and a doctor/masseuse/chiropractor for your neck. Maybe lay down while you wait for those appointments.

Active Head Restraints Deploy Without Warning

The active head restraints in some Jeep vehicles are handing out free concussions. A mechanical breakdown inside the restraint means they could deploy randomly at any time.

Also, loose cargo and other objects can hit the seat or headrest and cause it to deploy.

I just received this in the mail today. I've heard that it's been an ongoing problem for a number of Grand Cherokees. I have a 2017 Limited and haven't had the problem.

Thank you, hopefully this helps. I will take it to a dealer and see what they say.

Wow, it is about time they covered this. But now got to worry about it deploying and potentially causing injury.

With all of these ticking time bombs going off I'd be putting a headrest cover on mine if my WK2 was older. It's something I'll have to consider in a few years.

I got that same letter in the mail today too. Filed it away with all my important documents in case I ever need it someday. Fingers crossed my headrest never pops.

FCA should be doing something proactive instead of reactive. It’s nice that they are owning up to it and repairing them for no cost but I’d rather see them repair the problem before someone gets kicked in the head while driving.

They never stated if they are replacing it with the same defective design or not. I have a feeling its the same one since the "recall" is only after it breaks, I also like how they never say anything about injury to the consumer.

Has anyone else received a notice from FCA about this, I have not. I thought it affected all vehicles and not just certain ones?

I think the reason I got the notice is that when I bought the Jeep used, I registered it at mopar.com. I'm assuming they are using that as otherwise they would have no idea that I owned it.

So anyone who bought a 2014-2018 new or bought it used and registered it should get a notice, I hope.

Mine is also registered on Mopar.com but the site is acting weird for me, saying I need to register my vehicle even though it has been since 2017. Maybe it is just lost in the mail, I'll definitely keep an eye out.

I have a 2014 (built in late November 2013) and got this letter about a month or so ago. I bought it new.

What is an active head restraint in a Jeep Grand Cherokee?

The front driver and passenger seats are equipped with Active Head Restraints (AHR). In the event of a rear impact the AHRs will automatically extend forward minimizing the gap between the back of the occupants head and the AHR. The AHRs will automatically return to their normal position following a rear impact.

An Active Head Restraint (AHR) system is designed to lessen the impact of whiplash and is located in the front and passenger headrests. The AHR system protects against whiplash by deploying and extending the front half of the headrest forward during a rear end collision to 'catch' the occupant's head.
