Someone left you a really important message via voicemail. How do you access it? You can click on the voicemail notification to access it, but what happens if you accidentally swipe that notification away? There are three easy ways to check your voicemail on Android devices. Let’s check them out! 

How to check voicemail on Android by calling in

One of the easiest and oldest ways to check your voicemail on Android devices is to call your voicemail service. Open the Phone app on your Android device, open the dial pad, and tap and hold the number 1 to automatically dial your voicemail service.

Some smartphones will have a little voicemail icon underneath the 1 to indicate that’s the number you hold to access your voicemail service. But rest assured, if you don’t see that icon, holding down the number 1 will still get you to your mailbox.

If you’re not near your phone or your phone has died and you need to check your voicemail, you can easily check it from another phone. Dial your own phone number from another phone and wait for the “Please leave a message” recording. Once you hear that start playing, tap the star symbol (*) on the dial pad. You’ll be prompted to enter your voicemail PIN and then you’ll have full access to your voicemail inbox to hear, delete, and save any voicemails.

How to check voicemail on Android using Visual Voicemail

If you have Visual Voicemail enabled on your Android device, you can check your voicemail through here. Search through your apps to find Visual Voicemail and open it. You’ll be able to see all of your most recent voicemails and easily manage them.

Because Visual Voicemail is, well, visual, it’s a lot easier to sift through your voicemails. You don’t have to wait through automated menus and go back if you make a mistake.

If you don’t have Visual Voicemail enabled and you want to change that, it’s super easy. On some Android devices, you can open your Phone app, tap more or the three dots in the upper right, tap Settings > Voicemail, and turn on Visual Voicemail.

On my Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra, I’m not able to access Visual Voicemail through my Phone app’s settings. I have a separate Visual Voicemail app that I had to enable in order to see my voicemails listed out. Go to your phone’s Settings > Apps > Visual Voicemail and give permissions to the app to access your call logs, contacts, etc.

Check voicemail on Android with a third-party app

You can also check your voicemail on Android devices using a third-party visual voicemail app, like Voxist. 

Voxist is a completely free visual voicemail app that will do just what your carrier’s visual voicemail app will do. The really cool thing about Voxist is that it can do voicemail to text. So if you don’t have the time or are not able to listen to a voicemail, you can read what someone left on your voicemail. In this section, we’ll discuss how to use visual voicemail on Android. Most newer phones come with a visual voicemail app. Some phones will not come with one, but the carrier may make one available from your phone app store. 

Some phones with certain carriers will need to use a third-party app. In order to make this guide work for the most amount of people, we will use a third-party app.

How to Enable Visual Voicemail on Android

Step 1: Download YouMail from the Google Play Store.

Step 2: Open the app and click ‘GET STARTED’.

Step 3: Click ‘AGREE’.

Step 4: Click ‘ALLOW’.

Step 5: Select your Gmail profile or enter your email. Choose your password and click ‘NEXT’.

Step 6: It will identify your carrier. Click ‘YES’. Some carriers are under the umbrella of major carriers such as T-Mobile, Verizon, etc. Whatever the app pulls up should work fine.

Step 7: Enter your information and click ‘NEXT’.

Step 8: Click ‘ACTIVATE’ on the next screen.

Step 9: Click ‘OK’.

Step 10: Click ‘Verify Activation’.

Step 11: YouMail will call your phone. Click ‘Decline’.

Step 12: Click ‘GOT IT’.

Step 13: Click anywhere on the screen to dismiss the welcome notification.

Step 14: Call your phone from another phone and leave a message.

Step 15: Open the YouMail app and you will see your voicemail.

Step 16: Click on your voicemail. It may pop up a reminder to record a greeting. Click anywhere on the screen.

Step 17: Click ‘Play’ at the bottom to listen to the voicemail.

Wow! Now you can check voicemails with visual voicemail.

Other Third Party Voicemail Apps For Android

Carriers have notorious for blocking customers' access to visual voicemail on unlocked devices. It's one of those features that carriers want to own. It makes sense from a business perspective. Here are three additional third-party visual voicemail apps available for Android:

Google Voice

While Google Voice is a free service, you'll need to have an existing phone number to use it. It’s great if you're looking for a way to manage voicemails from multiple lines and carriers on one device.

Even if you don't want to use it with all of your phones, Google Voice can be used as a secondary option. when dealing with important numbers like those of medical facilities or loved ones. 

The app also offers caller ID and spam filtering features. They're not as robust as what you'll find on other apps in our roundup. They're still handy tools to have at your disposal though.

As far as visual voicemail goes, Google Voice is among our favorites because it's so easy to navigate. The interface is clean and simple. Even novice users will feel comfortable navigating through their messages here.

The only downside is that visual voicemails are stored online. If you have a limited data plan, it could add up quickly over time.

If you're in a supported region, Voxist is one of our favorite visual voicemail apps. The service allows users to check voice messages without ever having to listen to them.
