How many oz in a 2 liter soda

The two-liter bottle is a common container for soft drinks, beer, and wine. These bottles are produced from polyethylene terephthalate, also known as PET plastic, or glass using the blow molding process. Bottle labels consist of a printed, tight-fitted plastic sleeve. A resealable screw-top allows the contents to be used at various times while retaining carbonation.

In the United States, the two-liter bottle is one of the few cases where a product is sold by a round number of metric units. Since very few other beverages are sold in this exact quantity, the term "two-liter" in American English almost invariably refers to a soft drink bottle. Other common metric sizes for plastic soft drink bottles include 500 milliliters, 1 liter, and 3 liters.

History[edit]

PepsiCo introduced the first two-liter sized soft drink bottle in 1970.[1] Motivated by market research conducted by new marketing vice president John Sculley (who would later be known for heading Apple Inc. from 1983 to 1993),[2] the bottle and the method of its production were designed by a team led by Nathaniel Wyeth of DuPont, who received the patent in 1973.[3] In 1985, a three-liter bottle appeared on supermarket shelves. The design is still used to this day by some bottlers.[4][5]

Most modern-day two-liter bottles are one piece of PET (polyethylene terephthalate) with a base that is molded with a radial corrugation to provide strength for the bottom and the ability to stand upright. Most early two-liters had a separate opaque base glued to the hemispherical bottom of the clear PET flask. This base had a coaxial corrugation and drain holes.

Recycling[edit]

Used two-liter bottles see new life in a variety of uses including carpeting, boat hulls, polyester fabric, filling for jackets, sleeping bags, mattresses, pillows, recycling bins, artificial floating islands, scouring pads, and, on an increasing scale, new soft drink bottles.[6]

A standard 2-liter bottle contains 67.6 fluid ounces of liquid. Assuming that you’re using 8-ounce cups, you’ll have 8.45 glasses of whatever liquid is in the 2-liter bottle. Although 2 liters are commonly associated with storing soda, they’re also used to house other liquids like juice and seltzer water.

How Many Pints Are in a 2-Liter Bottle?

How Many Quarts Are in a 2-Liter Bottle?

How Many Gallons Are in a 2-Liter Bottle?

Tips for Measuring a Cup of Liquid

When you measure liquid, eyeballing it isn’t enough if you need an accurate measurement. Instead, try using measuring cups to make sure you’re pouring your desired amount of liquid. Another option is to use a food scale that has an option for measuring beverages. Put your cup or bowl on the scale first, and zero the scale before adding the beverage.

Reasons to Measure Your Beverages

If you’re used to pouring your beverage into the nearest clean glass, regardless of its size, you may wonder why you would ever want to measure your beverages. There are a couple of reasons you may want to know exactly how much liquid you’re pouring.

When you’re trying to improve your diet or count calories, one suggested technique is measuring everything you consume to ensure your portion sizes are in check. If you drink three glasses of soda each day and assume you’re pouring eight ounces of soda, this would mean you’re consuming approximately 282 calories worth of soda every day (assuming an 8-ounce glass has 94 calories).

However, you may be pouring more than 8 ounces. If you’re pouring 16 ounces each time you drink soda, this means 564 of your calories are from soda. You’re consuming 282 more calories every day than you intend to. During a single year, this can result in a weight gain of 29.4 pounds.

Another reason to know exactly how much liquid you’re pouring is that accuracy improves the taste of your cocktails and nonalcoholic drinks. Pouring too much or too little soda, juice, or seltzer water will affect the final taste of the recipe. The same logic applies to recipes that require a specific measurement of liquid.

Other Benefits of Knowing the Capacity of a 2-Liter Container

There are certain situations when you’ll want to know the capacity of a 2-liter. If you’re throwing a party or hosting a gathering, you’ll want to make sure you have ample beverages for your guests.

You know that a 2-liter has slightly more than eight 8-ounce cups of liquid. If you assume that each guest will have three 8-ounce glasses of soda, juice, or another beverage, and you have 20 expected guests, this means that you’ll need 60 glasses available for your guests.

Divide 60 by 8.45, which is the number of 8-ounce glasses in a 2-liter bottle, to get 7.1. To make sure you have sufficient beverages for your guests, you need to buy eight 2-liters of your desired drink.
