be a good job but it depends on the management When I first started at this job, management was okay and I was able to do the job properly. I got a quick training and they told me the basics of what to do. However, it was not as easy as I thought. I was not properly educated on their changer system and most of the new people always came up short on their tills meaning they were missing money. At certain times, I would have to take money out of my own pocket because my changer was short. If I counted all the money I put in, it would probably be a lot of money. As far as the employees, most of them succumb to stress and start not doing their jobs properly. People chill outside in the middle of the shift or even go as far as to go smoke while we need them on the inside. If you start working here, you most likely have to do more than what the job requires you to do. The equipment that they have ALWAYS messes up and is extremely outdated. They are certain days where the credit card readers aren't working, the screens start freezing in the middle of taking an order, and bits and pieces of an order are not coming through so you have to yell out what each person had. The headsets are terrible and you have to fish for the ones that won't static in your ear. I feel so bad because, at certain times, I genuinely cannot hear the customers and what they want. For example, in my last days, I came into work and the orders were not coming through on the bagging screen. So I had to print out every receipt in the drive-thru and tape them up ProsFree drinks ConsLow pay, hostile work environment, inadequate training, stressful 2.0 Its decent at best if you just REALLY need a job until you find a better one. They pay is terrible. A typical shift at Sonic is a bit of a mix for me. Most days, were good, fun and then there were those couple days out of the work week where it felt dreadful, i'd be forced into a bad mood by one of the managers/shift leaders. It was as if that is what this person looked forward to anytime they knew i'd be working on their shift, you could just feel the hatred radiating off of this person. Hatred not only for me, but everyone including themselves.You just knew this person hated themselves so much, that the only thing that would make them feel better about themselves is yelling at carhops or cooks about anything they could, no matter how small, for the sole purpose of making them feel like garbage. And this person would do this every single shift they worked. I thought about walking out at least 3 times a night every time i had to work on their shifts. The tips there were trash.. During the week id make no more than $20, which was somehow considered good or decent. and on the weekends i never made more than $30.. The majority of the time I'd would leave with $8-$10 during the week and on weekends almost always $20-$25. There were even a few times i left with literal change. There are 3 managers/shift leaders that actually do their jobs correctly and for the most part treat everyone with fairness. The other managers/shift leaders are insanely rude, love to play favorites, and they will often pick on newly hired employees and are just terribly backwards and just unprofessional. 3.0 To much drama for one place, poorly trained and uninformed team members When I first started here everything was great this was my first job ever and for a short time I enjoyed it. However as time went on it got worse and worse. Employees were rude to one another and when management was informed you were told to stop and that was it. However if you were in a situation with someone who was considered a favorite of the managers then you basically got away with whatever you wanted and never and I literally mean never got in trouble. Then came my oh so favorite employee meeting where every carhop was informed that we literally had to start running, yes I mean legit run like a dog is chasing you. This was news to me and when I questioned when this came into effect they said it always had been. Wait hold on "always in effect". Upon my hiring I was not informed of this nor was I informed of this during my training. So of course I brought up the issue of safety. Cars tend to leak oil at times and no matter what shoes you have on you will slip and fall which could then lead to bigger issues so when I brought this up I was told simply you just won't carhop if you don't run. Now there are carhops who are physically unable to run due to knee, ankle, or leg problems. Some carhops were pregnant at this time and others would just be getting out of high school sports and then have to come to work and run or get in trouble or fired was highly aggitating since I was not informed of this when I was trained or hired. Now I was informed of always moving with a sense ProsFlexible Schedule ConsRude coworkers, uninformative trainers/management, working conditions 3.0 fast, repetitive work; immediate gratification I memorized the menu forwards and backwards, learned to make and serve every drink combination possible, and learned to expo, bag, and serve food according to appropriate food service standards. It's super important to be able to think on your feet. Act quick, calculate quick. Customers don't like it when you look like you don't know something. They can smell fear. Managers were usually my peers who were friendly with upper management and usually had good times on mystery shops and consequently were promoted. When I first started working at Sonic, I was fifteen and my boss emotionally abused me and made me get on my knees and Windex the side of a garbage can. But when I was in my 20s and working through college, my boss was really cool and fun and smart and she's a big reason I kept working there for so long. She worked long hours and didn't get paid nearly enough for it. Coworkers tended to range from dependable because they needed the job security to angry teenagers whose parents made them get a job. If one of your coworkers makes a negligent mistake, every one of you pays the price, so learning good teamwork is a must. There's nowhere to sit indoors so in wintertime and at night, if things are slow or you're on break, you have to stand inside or sit on the safe. Sitting on counter tops is against food code, according to my manager. I couldn't cite my sources if you asked me to, but keeping butts away from strangers' food seems pretty logical to me. Do you want to constantly be scheduled short-staffed and expected to do five people's jobs just so the company can save a quick buck, just so they can turn around and blame you and everyone the next day because the store run by two people didn't have fast enough tray times? Do you want a job where management will attempt to force you to do e-learning for 5+ hours on your free time at home without pay, months into your employment? Would you like to work hard getting district managers to like you only for them to be replaced every two months? Do you want to work at a place where the rules change drastically every week? Would you want to work for management that continually rehires their worst employees while giving their good employees a hard time over what is completely inconsequential? Do you like clear and unrelenting favoritism in the workplace? Do you like work environments where advancement opportunities are based on "favors"? Do you like management that continuously solves problems that don't actually exist while refusing to acknowledge the huge glaring issues surrounding every facet of the workplace? Do you like attempting to work with equipment essential to your job that breaks down literally every day? Do you want to work at a place where the main system won't stay running for more than a week at most without going down? Would you want to be blamed and shamed when said system 3.0 Company doesn't care about their employees, but my co-workers cared about me. Sonic is alright for a first job, depending on where you work. The work environment is stressful and there can be many rude customers. I was only paid $5 per hour and expected to make tips to make minimum wage. Sonic carhops can only accept tips in cash, so more customers didn't tip as opposed to the ones who do tip. As a young, pretty girl with decent social skills, I made a lot of tips, so I ended up making about $12 an hour. However, my male coworkers didn't have quite as much luck with tips. The wages at Sonic don't raise much over time. One of my coworkers has worked for Sonic for over a decade and still only made $12 an hour. She has to work 10 hours a day for 6 days of the week to make enough for her family. She is the hardest working person at Sonic and always has a good attitude, but she is not paid enough for everything that she does. When a customer presses the red button on the menu, it sets off a VERY loud, high pitched ringing noise in the kitchen. Hearing this sound for 8 hours straight each day became very annoying and stress-inducing. Now, working at Sonic wasn't all bad. All of my coworkers were very friendly, caring, and supportive of each other. We had lots of fun and lots of laughs together. I still visit the location I worked at every once in a while because my coworkers were good people who truly care about me. Belive it or not, my confidence level was the highest when I worked at Sonic because I was spending a lot of time with these people. 3.0 Non-Flexible Hours/Hard for High School Students Very hard to manage school work and work part-time when they want to schedule any hour of the day after school or any day they know you are out of school. If you do not go to the general manager and set preferable hours yourself they will take advantage of you and though you may be working overtime and gaining extra money, mind you, you're still working part-time and that shouldn't be. Overworked and put in positions were it is almost impossible for one to cover another's shift which must be covered or there are consequences because everyone is usually scheduled for everyday and will only take another's shift by choice which is highly unlikely because they already worked that day. General manager is nice, two older managers are nice as well, younger managers not so much. Getting to know and spend time with my co-workers whether cross-training or during meetings or during the late nights after close was one of the most enjoyable parts of my job. The other was greeting costumers in drive-thru especially and speaking to them stranger or friend even though I rarely was tipped in drive-thru. Learned a lot as far as selling and promoting goes as well as how to greet, speak, and properly assist people. Keeping uniforms clean was hard to say the least but anyone would imagine it could be working in fast food. Keeping track and organizing money as a carhop is challenging as well. The manager Ken Edwards was the best boss I ever had. The work is hard and fast-paced, so get ready. On a typical day at work I would arrive and do one of the morning chores; bathrooms, windows, menu boards, ice cream bar, or shelves, walls, and counters. We would prepare kid's meal bags until work started to pick up. I learned a great deal about managing money. I already had quite a bit of experience with cashier work, but it was different to actually carry your own bank and be totally responsible for that bank all day and pay up before you leave if you are off, fortunately that only happened twice to me, and I had to supplement my bank with my tips. All my co-workers were the best, we all had each other's back, during a lunch crush, or happy hour we all helped each other out to get through the craziness of it all. This job is very physically demanding. The two doors we had to push through to get outside to the customers were very hard to push and the owners refused to do anything about it even after several pleas from many employees. The trays were sometimes very heavy and my arms were bent all day and pushing the door as well actually injured my elbows and I still today wake up with pain in either or both arms. The most enjoyable part of the job was when we hit a rush and everybody pulled together and we truly were a team and we won it every day. My boss was actually a personal friend, the father of my daughter's best friend, and also his wife worked with me there and we all became good friends outside of work. During work of course he was my boss, but what an incredible ProsAwesome boss, great teamwork, fun environment. ConsShort breaks, physically demanding, rude customers. 3.0 Sonic Drive-In can be a fun, fast paced job where you can get to meet a diverse group of people. Working at the Sonic Drive-In started out as a fun and fast paced job. A lot of the mechanics of working there remind me of video games, where you have to get certain tasks done with certain time limits and specifications. Similarly to video games, our amount of sales is recorded as sort of a "score." The people working were usually diverse in age, but things like morning, evening, or night shifts usually collected certain groups together. This meant that morning crews are usually older people, evening crews consisted of parent aged people, and night crew was almost always consisted of teenagers, save for a kitchen worker or the manager. The management was nice, and always wanted the best for the store, workers, and customers. The specific store I worked at had a tight crew, as we lost a few workers in the year that I worked there. This meant that, because I was an adult, out of highschool, and had enough "free time" I almost always had closing duties, and worked with the same handful of people every night. Closing duties can basically be summed up as assistant to the assistant manager, while also working as a carhop. I had to make sure my coworkers did their chores, deposited the correct amount of money, do my chores, and accommodate any customers right until closing. Overall, I found the experience enjoyable. The lack of any raises, benefits, or set hours definitely wore on me, as well as my flat feet, and I knew I had to quit when I needed to see a pediatrist. I think it's ProsHalf priced food, and a friendly atmosphere. ConsOccasionally very stressful, physically demanding, low paying and no benefits. 5.0 great job for starting workers; teens On a typical day you clock in take orders, make drinks/ice cream, expedite, take orders out, greet customers, and complete transactions. additional duties include, stocking, prepping, cleaning everything; tables, machines, trays, dishes, menus, and the lot. Skating carhops get paid extra, and double/triple tips depending on the service you give customers. I prefer skating because it makes the job easier and more fun. if you choose not to skate you will be miserable. some people say"oh i cant skate" but you can with practice. i started skating and got good in a couple weeks, you just have to expand your comfort zone. you WILL fall time to time don't get me wrong, the trick is to learn to fall the "right way" which is basically ditching the tray and NOT landing on your hands or wrists/elbows. i recommend wearing protective gear while your still learning. once you get the hang of it, it becomes second nature. i got good enough, i was extremely fast and when i did fall, i was able to save the food and not get hurt. everyone's usually super cool, customers, managers and co-workers alike. there is a lot of multitasking involved, so hand-eye coordination is a big thing. the hardest part of the job is keeping your cool, easy for me but some people have trouble, it gets very busy so you have to bring your A-game everyday or you'll fall flat on your face(figurative). my favorite part is how all the customers think your the coolest person just because you skate, and you always have a li Prosfree meals drinks/ or half off depending on location. accualy fun.
