Like clockwork, Apple is back again with a slew of new iPhones to convince you that it's time to upgrade to the company's best iPhone ever made. Amazingly, despite the supply chain issues faced last year and the production crunches that various factories still face, the iPhone 13 release schedule is on time and back on track to pre-Covid periods.

Like the previous year, 2021 will also have four new iPhone 13 models to satiate a variety of users - even if the Mini variant wasn't really a hot commodity in the iPhone 12 lineup. Here are some highlights of the new phones:-

• ProMotion displays for iPhone 13 Pro, a first on any iPhone - up to 120Hz adaptive refresh rate
• New colour options, more refined design and 20% smaller notch
• New camera and video features across all iPhone 13 models
  • Cinematic Mode video shooting (also known as rack focus), Adjust bokeh even after it's captured, Shoot in Dolby Vision HDR, Smart HDR4 for smarter HDR handling with people in the shot, Photographic Styles keep skin tones natural while amping up or muting a scene.
• Improved camera system and lenses across all models
  • iPhone 13 and Mini - Larger main camera sensor with sensor-shift optical image stabilization (previously only found on the Pro series), Faster ultra wider camera.
  • iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max - All of the above plus 2cm macro photography, macro videos (including slow motion and time-lapse), Wider main camera, LiDAR scanner for Night mode portraits, new telephoto camera with Night Mode capability, end-to-end ProRes workflow, 
• Returning features - Ceramic Shield for its display, IP68 rated for water (up to 6 meters for 30 minutes, similar to last year) and dust resistance and MagSafe wireless charging

In summary, the biggest advancements to the iPhone 13 are its powerful processing system enabling leading-edge machine learning capabilities, which also lead to more advanced capabilities like better battery life, improved photo and video capture, more secure and is made for gamers - especially on the Pro models that have a bolstered GPU. The iPhone 13 is about refinement and it does that very well compared to its predecessors, probably also thanks to its new ProMotion display.

Are they more expensive?

Interestingly, the new iPhone 13 and 13 Mini are actually cheaper than the iPhone 12 equivalents. Plus, they start at 128GB and there are no 64GB models. So they are better and cheaper than their predecessors - not something you can say often for an Apple product.

Over on the Pro editions, the prices have remained intact and Apple has added a new storage tier of 1TB. This makes the iPhone 13 Pro the most expensive phone ever - a whopping S$2,629 for the 1TB Pro Max edition.
