As you have noticed, the standard version of your chat will open with this contact.

This is where you can send non-private media, texts, and voice messages.

Accessing Hidden Sections of Facebook Messenger on Android

Now, if you intend to access the hidden portion of your Facebook Messenger to the desired secret conversation…

…follow these steps:

1. Tap on the encircled “i“symbol in the top right of the screen. This opens details and Messenger settings for your selected contact and the active conversation.
2. Find and tap the entry on the menu to access a secret conversation
3. You will then get a new black chat screen and you can begin a conversation with this encrypted conversation settings described above.

Any messages sent in this secret chat feature can be either media or text, so you can add photos and videos by clicking the camera or media gallery icons.

You can also send your GPS location through this Facebook Messenger Secret Chat by clicking the (+) icon and then on the “Place” menu item.

From this screen, you can also find previous messages you have sent/received that were not given a destruction timer.

You can designate an expiration time for messages you have sent.

Once this deadline expires, messages get deleted from both devices, and are no longer able to get read or viewed.

Send Self-Destructing Content Through Facebook Messenger on Android

If you want your messages and content to have a time limit in the Facebook Messenger secret conversations…

…follow these steps:

1. Tap on the icon with a stopwatch
2. From this drop-down menu, set a deadline ranging from 5 seconds to a total of a full day.
3. Once you have set this time, it is applied to all of the future messages in the thread you send until all messages disappear.

If you want to disable this feature once you have set it, you have to tap on the stopwatch icon again then make sure “No” is chosen.

Once you start a secret conversation, you should note that you can still see it on the main screen of Facebook Messenger (the one with the house symbol.)

If you already have a normal conversation with this individual, both conversations will appear on this main screen.

It is easy to note the secret conversation from the other threads. One is marked with a black background color and a lock symbol.

If you want to switch quickly between a normal conversation to this secret version, you can tap on either of these. You can also choose the encircled “i” symbol and choose to access the regular conversation or secret conversation depending on the thread you are in.

When it comes to protecting your privacy, you need to use all of the available tools at your disposal. I love the secret conversations feature on Messenger, but you should beware: this does not ward off installed spyware on your device.

Finding Secret Conversations on Messenger with iPhone

Android devices are not the only operating system allowed to access these new popular features on Facebook Messenger.

You can use this tool to send messages and media that self-destructs, even through the Messenger application for iOS.

To begin using this feature, just follow these few steps:

1. Tap on the Facebook Messenger app on your smartphone home screen
2. From the home screen on Messenger (house symbol), locate the contact you want to contact with the private chat. You can also view previous messages shared in that particular thread
3. Once you see the typical Facebook conversation open up, tap on the name of this contact in the top bar of the chat. This way, you gain access to the Contact Section and can choose to begin or continue a secret conversation

Once you do this, you can see an extra Facebook Messenger conversation show up on the home screen with a black background – this is your secret conversation.

You can use the text field in this thread to message as you normally would with average conversations.

In this private communication, you can share text, videos, photos, recorded voice messages, and other options.

Send Self-Destructing Messages in Messenger for iOS

Would you like to make your conversations more secure and even have messages self-destruct after a designated deadline?

That’s easy enough to do – just follow these steps:

1. Tap the stopwatch icon
2. From the menu to set this time, move the cursor to a preset time period ranging from five seconds to a full 24 hours.
3. Then tap “Done” to confirm your choices

This designation gets applied to all of your future messages.

Should you want to remove this restriction, tap the timer symbol and move from your chosen timeline to the No option.

Please note that though this is a secret conversation, it will still show up as a preview on a home screen for your Facebook Messenger application.

If a normal conversation is already active, you will see both conversations on this list. The secret one will have a black background and a lock icon while the typical thread will have the same background as the rest of this list.

I would remind you that when you set a timer on your content, it will be applied to all future messages that you send in that thread until you change this. Disable this function with the steps above if you no longer want to use it.

Viewing Secret Messenger Conversations (Web Version)

As I write this tutorial, the Web Version of Facebook does not permit you to view these secret messages and conversations through Messenger.

They are only present in the mobile versions of Facebook and Messenger.

If you have scoured the internet for more information about getting this secret conversation option on the web version, you have likely only encountered content about the section hidden by Facebook where message requests wind up.

What I mean is, when you are contacted by someone on Facebook Messenger who is not one of your friends, their messages get sorted into a hidden, special folder by the network.

This is a ‘secret’ or ‘hidden’ section visible on the web version of Facebook.

If you want to find this, here is how you do that:

1. Log in to Facebook on this platform and click on the Messenger symbol
2. After that, you will see a preview section open for received messages. Click on Message Requests and, if you see no messages, click on View Results without Filters
3. This hidden section is also visible on the web version of Messenger. Once logged in, click the gear symbol in the top left corner
4. Click on the option that appears, Message Requests
5. No message here? Click on View Filtered Requests option and see Facebook messages from non-friends if applicable

In the web version of the messaging service, you cannot see secret conversations portion of Messenger. I believe that this is only a matter of time and future updates will correct this oversight.

How do you track secret conversations on Facebook Messenger?

If you want to be able to see someone else’s secret conversations on Messenger, you will find it to be absolutely impossible without a third-party app or acquiring the user’s credentials.

In the latter case, you could use hacking techniques like phishing or keylogging, but keep in mind that these methods are illegal and very difficult to perform if you don’t have advanced IT skills.

However, if you don’t know much about computers and have a few dollars to invest, you can simply use one of many Messenger tracker apps easily found online. The most popular of these apps is called mSpy.
