How to train your dragon movies and shows in order

DreamWorks Animation produced the first How to Train Your Dragon in 2011, following it up with two sequels in 2014 and 2019, respectively. That watch order is simple, just watch the three films in order. However, there are also various shorts and television series that fit at various places in the timeline, so that's what I'll be focusing on here: the watch order for the How to Train Your Dragon television series. Specifically, this order focuses on the story of Hiccup, Toothless and friends and ignores the spin-offs Rescue Riders and Nine Realms. The movies will also be included for continuity purposes, as Hiccup's story runs tightly through both. Minor spoilers for the How to Train Your Dragon franchise.

1. How to Train Your Dragon (2011)
• The first films in the franchise is the obvious starting point. Everything else follows this film.
2. Legend of the Boneknapper Dragon
3. Book of Dragons
• A pair of shorts that follow the first movie and feature both 3D and 2D animation. They expand the lore of the world, with Book of Dragons specifically referencing the adventure from Legend of the Boneknapper. These two shorts can be skipped if desired.
4. Gift of the Night Fury
• The first story-based follow up to the film. It expands on Hiccup's relationship with Toothless.
5. DreamWorks Dragons: Riders of Berk S1
6. DreamWorks Dragons: Defenders of Berk S2
• Arguable two seasons of the same show, Riders and Defenders of Berk show the after-effects of the events of the first movie while further developing Hiccup, Toothless, and the supporting cast.
7. Dawn of the Dragon Racers
• Another short featuring the gang's last big adventure on Berk before the second film. It is basically just another episode of the television series.
8. DreamWorks Dragons: Race to the Edge S1-6
• A follow up to Defenders of Berk that takes the main cast out of Berk to further expand the world and characters. The sixth season directly foreshadows the events of the second movie.
9. How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2014)
10. How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2019)
• These two films cap off the main portion of the franchise. The second film takes place shortly after the end of Race to the Edge while The Hidden World takes place one year later, although there is no television material in-between.
11. How to Train Your Dragon: Homecoming
• An extended epilogue to The Hidden World that provides a more optimistic view of the world's future, although it is not necessary to enjoy the end of Hiccup's and Toothless' story.

In 2010, How to Train Your Dragon flew into cinemas. The animated family film – about the friendship between a boy and a dragon – received praise from critics, and proved very popular with audiences too.
