‘I’ll Give Thanks’ - Housefires

As we continue to live with uncertainty in the midst of the coronavirus outbreak, some of our Worship Leaders are writing blogs sharing their favourite worship songs, delving into the meaning behind the lyrics, and helping us lift our eyes to Jesus again whatever our daily life is looking like. They’ve also put together a Spotify Playlist that you can find here, with Oasis favourites and a few new songs to encourage you during this time. Here’s the first blog, by Sarah Pritchard:

I don’t know about you, but I find myself on a rollercoaster of emotions daily at the moment. Some days it feels like each hour brings a new wave of thoughts, questions, ponderings, and things to panic about. It’s at those times the best thing I can do is to head to Spotify and whack on some worship music.

I often find that there is one song I gravitate towards for a time because it expresses exactly where I am at. As I listen and sing my heart connects to the lyrics and melody and I am able to express what I often can’t find the words for. As we sing truths about God not only does it open us up to his presence, it does us good to be reminded of who He is and what He has done for us.

The song that I rush to at the moment is ‘I’ll Give Thanks’ by Housefires. It does me good to listen to this song because it reminds me that every morning is a chance to encounter the mercy of God afresh — whatever has happened in the days before His mercies are, and will always be, new for me. It reminds me that God is passionate about me, He sings and rejoices over me, His faithfulness is on display constantly. None of these things change whatever situation I find myself in.

The chorus simply repeats ‘I’ll give thanks to God when I don’t have enough, ‘cos He’s more than enough, and He knows what I need.’ Some days I manage to belt that out at the top of my lungs and other days I just need to hear it and let it soak over me. The lyrics do something in my heart because they encourage me to look beyond my current situation, to lift my eyes up to the hills, where my help comes from, and know that He is all I need. In a time where every day seems to produce a long list of concerns and new information floods over us the beautiful refrain simply declares ‘why do I worry? God knows what I need….’

I love that this song enables me to bring everything before God, as I sing ‘why do I worry…’ I can run through the things in my head that concern me and before I know it I’m declaring ‘God knows what I need.’

Can I encourage you today to give this song a go, let it minister to you for the first time or the fifteenth time. It will do you good! Click here to listen on Youtube, and find the lyrics below.

Housefires — I’ll Give Thanks

In the morning You sing over me
And I receive Your mercy
Your faithfulness is clear to see
It’s constant everyday
In the morning
In the morning You sing over me
And I receive Your mercy
Your faithfulness is clear to see
It’s like the sunrise
Constant everyday

Every breath I breathe an invitation
To believe You are creating
Something good
Though this season doesn’t tell my story
I know You’ll move mountains for me
You’re just that good

So I’ll give thanks to God
When I don’t have enough
’Cause He’s more than enough
And He knows what I need
So I’ll give thanks to God
When I don’t have enough
’Cause He’s more than enough
And He knows what I need
Oh, He knows what I need, yes

In the silence, I choose to believe
You’re working in the waiting
Though the future isn’t clear to me, no
I trust You anyway

Every breath I breathe, oh-oh-ohh
Every breath I breathe an invitation
To believe You are creating
Something good, oh-ohh
Though this season doesn’t tell my story
I know You’ll move mountains for me
You’re just that good

So I’ll give thanks to God
When I don’t have enough
’Cause He’s more than enough
And He knows what I need
So I’ll give thanks to God
When I don’t have enough
’Cause He’s more than enough
And He knows what I need
Oh, He knows what I need, yes

So why do I worry?
Why do I worry?
Why do I worry?
God knows what I need
