One of the gaming internet's more reliable sources of leaks is reporting that a Nintendo Direct will happen in September, and that Switch versions of two classic Zelda games will be announced there.

That's according to journalists Mike Minotti and Jeff Grubb, speaking on their Last of the Nintendogs podcast. "We are committing to it: there's going to be a Nintendo Direct in September," Minotti said. He also said "the one thing we are very, very sure is getting announced at this Direct are the Wind Waker and Twilight Princess ports for Switch."

Grubb's sources say the Direct is likely to happen the week of September 12, though the specific date is uncertain. With Zelda news expected here, this is unlikely to be a third-party-focused Partner Direct, though it could still take on that Direct Mini branding, meaning there wouldn't be quite as many big announcements as you might expect. Grubb said he's aware of some "not super exciting" third-party announcements planned for the show.

That's all Grubb and Minotti were willing to confidently report about the Direct based on their sources, though they did speculate that this is a likely venue for long-expected announcements like the Metroid Prime remaster, a release date for Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp, an official reveal for the leaked Fire Emblem game, or Game Boy games for the Switch Online service.

It's worth noting that Nintendo has had a major Direct broadcast in September every year since the launch of the Switch, so a new event this coming month would fit neatly into that pattern.

We'll surely have more for our list of upcoming Switch games soon.

Yesterday’s Nintendo Direct brought all sorts of exciting announcements. The Legend of Zelda series was one area of focus for the broadcast, with Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity receiving an expansion pass and The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD being announced. Series producer Eiji Aonuma also confirmed that more details regarding The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild‘s unnamed sequel will be revealed later this year. Some Zelda fans expressed disappointment regarding the Direct, hoping for more Zelda content to celebrate the 35th anniversary. However, according to journalist Andy Robinson of Video Games Chronicle (VGC), The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker and The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess are “100% coming this year” to Switch. This would make sense as both games are among the remaining few Wii U titles yet to make their way to the Nintendo Switch.

Is this likely to happen?

Robinson has a good track record when it comes to the rumor mill. Last year, VGC reported that Super Mario 3D All-Stars existed in March, way before its announcement in September. If this is anything to go off, we may have more Zelda content on Switch than we originally expected. The remasters of The Wind Waker and Twilight Princess are likely to happen on Switch because they’re probably already raring to go.

In my personal opinion, I believe that Nintendo is probably wanting to wait until after March 31, 2021, as that is when all the Mario 35th anniversary celebrations end. It probably doesn’t want to shift focus onto another franchise just yet, but hopefully fans have more to be looking forward to later in the year. Also, next week will see Pokémon celebrating its 25th anniversary on Feb. 27.

Although it may not be what you wanted, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD seems like a perfect fit for the anniversary celebrations. The game tells the origin story of key events, such as the creation of the Master Sword and Hyrule itself. If you weren’t a fan of the Wii version’s motion controls, Nintendo has confirmed that the game will also have button controls.
