Ahrggg -spring bolt stuck in bushing

Ahrrrggggg! Having the FSJ nightmare weekend tryin to get the rear spring and shackle bolts out.

The leaf bolts seem to be stuck fast in the bushing - so no matter how much force you apply the bolt 'snaps' or springs back like crazy. I have tried heat on it/ PB blaster for 2 weeks / JAck under bolt / Impact wrench. As you apply force the whole spring binds and moves round with the wrench- then like elastic !

Has anyone tried a sawzall and just cut the whole bolt either side of the leaf onn inside next to bushing?

Is the chassis threaded or should bolt hammer out? The nut is off but its NOT comin out _

BS: before sawzall, I managed to slide the best hacksaw blade (lame de scie a metaux), and cut the bolt off on both side, of course the bushing is not coming off, but it can be pressed on.

A few years later I got some springs at a local junkyard, where they pull the part for you, they used the map torch (in fact it was the oxy acetylene) and burnt the bushing out....

I am a 2hrs away from you at the moment, but not avail. this sunday....

sawzall then! Thanks Guys. Multiple issue dont help like working alone, on axle stands, Propane tank near and lines above the bushing

I have new springs with bushes fitted ready & new bolts - so the ones im trying to get off are sacrificial! I'll try and cut the bolt either side of the bush and hammer the remains out.

Not looking forward to the Gas tank side

If you aren't saving the spring this is a good approach

Being my third XJ I took a different approach this time getting the rear springs off. It went better that the others I've done, and quicker with no busted knuckles.
Get one of these

And make your first cut like so

Then turn the left over part 180º and make another cut. Peel the whole thing out of the way and quickly cut the metal sleeve covering the rubber bushing with the same tool in two places and peel it off. Next use a razor knife to cut the rubber in two places and remove. Now you have access to the pesky bushing that the bolt is frozen to. Spray it with some PB and whack it a couple of times, then the bolt will screw right out. Both sides took thirty minutes total

Same here on those pesky bolts. I heard of XJ guys cutting holes in the floors to get those bolt out. I gaurantee if you follow what I showed, you will have them off 15 minutes each side.

Keep us posted

How do you tighten leaf spring shackle bolts?

Tightening the shackle bolts too much will squeeze the shackle straps against the leaf springs and the whole suspension system will bind and cause problems. The best thing to do when tightening down shackle bolts is to use lock nuts and tighten them until they are snug and then backed off 1/4 turn.

What is a leaf spring bolt?

What are leaf spring bolts? Spring bolts are the hardware used to attach a leaf spring to a spring hanger or a spring shackle. A spring bolt is a hardened hex head bolt and will typically be used when a rubber bushing is installed in the spring, and there is no need for the connection to be greaseable.
