Kentucky Bluegrass sod, also known as POA Pratensis, is part of the Perennial bluegrass family. Bluegrass sod has other popular names, such as “KBG sod”,"KY Bluegrass sod”, and “bluegrass turf.”Our Kentucky Bluegrass blend has thin blades that are soft, grow slow, and have a rich green color. The Bluegrass sod blades are unique in that the grass blades have a soft matted green color finish on both sides of the grass blade, giving bluegrass sod the most uniform and one of the best aesthetic looks. The vibrant soft green characteristic consistent with Kentucky Bluegrass works well in sod mixes like fescue and bluegrass and bluegrass ryegrass sod mixes. Bluegrass sod grows best in cooler, coastal, and mountainous climatic conditions; therefore, bluegrass sod is well-adaptive to winter and cold conditions. In addition, the Delta Bluegrass is a favored type of grass for animals because it helps aid digestion and upset stomach. Kentucky Bluegrass sod mix Drought Resistance

Bluegrass is known to grow best in humid conditions. It also grows best on drained, fertile soil because of bluegrass's ability to retain and absorb water and nutrients. Heavy drought periods or irregular watering can shock this cool-season grass and requires a moderate amount of water, or extreme heat with no water can cause bluegrass to go into shock. Bluegrass in shock goes dormant to try to protect itself and may cause the bluegrass sod or bluegrass seed quality to diminish over time. Bluegrass sod under-watered may lead to damage and bare spots, which take time to repair. Bluegrass sod is equipped to recover from both hot and cold conditions.  With proper watering, even in extreme weather conditions such as drought or snow, Bluegrass can overcome weather susceptibility to damage from excessive heat and cold as a cool-season grass. Bluegrass sod has a dense green cover and uniform structure that significantly keeps the sod hydrated. The bluegrass's ability to retain water protects the grass from withering and developing dark patches during drought periods. Kentucky Bluegrass Heat Tolerance

Bluegrass sod grows in direct sun, proving that bluegrass can handle the heat but prefers sun and shade. Bluegrass sod does better in humid areas or areas with lower temperatures. Extremely high temperatures cause the loss of hydration in the soil and the bluegrass, and this affects growth. Summer climate in areas with high temperatures is not favored because the Kentucky Bluegrass has a relatively shallow root system that makes it hard for the grass to absorb moisture from the soil in high temperatures for prolonged periods of time. Making sure bluegrass stays hydrated all year is a must. Bluegrass has a uniform cover and uniquely structured blade that helps in keeping the grass blade soft and thin; This helps bluegrass tolerate high-temperature conditions with proper watering. Bluegrass sod has a natural rhizome structure that gives it uniform growth and a dense, thick cover, which in turn allows water retention to withstand and recover from high temperatures while providing constant repairing.

Kentucky Bluegrass Disease Resistance

Kentucky bluegrass is equipped to resist diseases such as fungal growth, which causes rust-like damage on the lawn. Diseases are attributed to different conditions like over-watering, damp soil, dry soil, under-watered conditions, and extreme weather or environmental changes. However, the Delta Bluegrass is resistant to most pests and diseases resulting from such conditions.

Kentucky Bluegrass Wear and Tear Damage Recovery

Kentucky Bluegrass grows best in Coastal or Mountainous regions, which can generally have a steep landscape. These areas are prone to soil erosion due to inclination that causes damage to the grass. Delta series Bluegrass sod has two ways to repair from bluegrass seed and from bluegrass rhizomes that give a dense bluegrass sod with the thick structure to resist soil erosion. The rhizomes in the Delta Bluegrass also support healing and damage recovery because of the bluegrass's fast-growing nature. A Bluegrass sod mix with the ability to recover from damage while keeping the lawn green even in the extreme cold. Bluegrass sod can quickly recover the bluegrass to a normal state when adequately irrigated.

Kentucky Bluegrass Soil Adaptations

Well-drained, fertile soils are ideal for the growth of our Bluegrass sod. The moisture and nutrients of fertile soil facilitate healthy growth. However, because the Delta Bluegrass sod is well-adaptive, bluegrass can also grow on less-than-ideal soils. The Kentucky bluegrass sod has the ability to adapt to poorly drained soil and recover from damaging conditions is another reason the Delta Bluegrass is ideal for lawns.

Kentucky Bluegrass Watering Recommendations

Because the 100% Kentucky Bluegrass has shorter roots, it requires specific care. For the first 2 -3 weeks, watering is recommended 4 - 8 times per day for 5 - 10 minutes (please note these are general recommendations and do not take into account factors such as environmental conditions, varying irrigation systems, and water pressure). In the 3rd week, water once daily for 15 - 20 minutes. Once the lawn has been established, regular and consistent watering of at least 1 inch (2.54 cm) per week is required, and a recommended 2 inches (ca. 5 cm) during warm weather. Generally, less irrigation is emphasized because over-watering produces fungus, and this type of grass is susceptible to root rot.

Kentucky Bluegrass Mowing Directions

Weekly and bi-weekly mowing is recommended to eliminate weeds and discourage weed growth, with a recommended height of 2 - 2 ½ inches. The more your mow bluegrass sod and bluegrass grass seed, the better the rooting system develops. Bluegrass sod does not go dormant and will need regular maintenance for the bluegrass year-round green.

Midnight Kentucky Bluegrass

Midnight Kentucky Bluegrass gets the name from the deep dark green color of this Kentucky bluegrass. Midnight bluegrass has a slower growth pattern, also known as a dwarf growing habit. Midnight Kentucky Bluegrass works great with fescue and ryegrass. Midnight Kentucky Bluegrass has a high rhizome count, also called tiller count. This creates fast repair. Midnight Kentucky Bluegrass with proper maintenance, fertilizing, and mowing, can be cut low. Midnight Kentucky Bluegrass can be cut as low as 1/2 inch in cooler areas. The average cut height is between 1/2"-2" and must always be started at the highest mow heights for Midnight Kentucky Bluegrass. With sod mixtures of Midnight Kentucky Bluegrass, always check the other grass mow heights before cutting your sod or grass seed.

Bedazzled Kentucky Bluegrass is the current best-performing bluegrass in drought tolerance compared to other Kentucky Bluegrasses. Bedazzled Kentucky Bluegrass is a TWCA or the Turfgrass Water Conservation Alliance approved Kentucky Bluegrass. While having the best drought tolerance of all Kentucky Bluegrass variations Bedazzled Kentucky Bluegrass including all other bluegrass types does require consistent watering to stay full, dense, and green. The Unique Factor about bedazzled Kentucky bluegrass and why many sod farms use this bluegrass is because of the fast, vigorous seed growth. Kentucky bluegrass seeds and rhizomes spread and are called spreading grass and not bunching grass. Bedazzled bluegrass speeds up the repairs and continuously seeds the lawn while staying green and looking great at any mow height.

Bonaire Kentucky Bluegrass

Bonaire bluegrass is a shamrock version of Kentucky bluegrass with very fast spring growth and is one of the best types of grass in general against disease resistance.
