Expert Faculty, Successful Residents

I am delighted by your interest in our Internal medicine residency program at Saint Mary’s Hospital. Founded in 1907, Saint Mary’s has been affiliated with the Yale University School of Medicine as a teaching hospital for over 40 years. For more than 15 years, we served as one of three hospitals for the Yale Primary Care Residency Program, and we remain involved in the Yale Medicine-Pediatrics Residency Program.

The vast majority of our faculty are Yale faculty members, and we are proud of our educational tradition. Saint Mary’s has produced physicians of the highest caliber, including academic and clinical general internists, medical subspecialists, and both clinical and laboratory investigators. Our residents have been candidates for highly competitive jobs and fellowship positions across the country.

Flexible Training Options

We recognize that our residents have a variety of career aspirations and thus we strive to provide flexibility in training options. Our program provides an excellent balance between inpatient and outpatient clinical experiences and didactic activities. We have created a top-notch academic experience in a friendly, community hospital environment. In addition, our residents can choose from multiple elective experiences at Yale-New Haven Hospital.

Welcome to Our Family

The Saint Mary’s Residency Program in Internal Medicine produces outstanding internists with excellent clinical skills and experience in teaching, research and scholarly activity. We appreciate your interest in becoming part of the Saint Mary’s family and look forward to receiving your application.

Shawnette Alston, MD

Post-doctoral training has been part of St. Mary’s tradition since 1904. To this day we provide compassionate care to the Bay Area community, including the urban underserved. Our residents and faculty are a diverse group who reflect the multi-cultural and multi-racial patient population of the Bay Area. The Internal Medicine residency is a highly collegial program that strives to combine the best educational aspect of both community hospital and major academic medical center settings. Maintaining a collaborative and supportive teaching environment that fosters learning and equips our residents with the skills necessary to become expert internists is, and remains, our primary goal.
