Touch a truck long island 2022

Touch-a-Truck events that offer free fun for kids and families will be hosted on Long Island this weekend.

On Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., children ages 2 to 11 are invited to the Middle Country Public Library (101 Eastwood Blvd.) in Centereach, to explore different types of trucks from law enforcement agencies, the fire department, the Town of Brookhaven and the U.S. Army Reserve, along with vehicles from commercial and industrial companies.

Smith Haven Mall (313 Smith Haven Mall) in Lake Grove will also be the site of a Touch-a-Truck event from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. More than 50 vehicles will be on-site for children to sit in and climb on, and to be photographed. Trucks include big rigs, fire and rescue trucks, police vehicles and more. The event is presented by WBAB and BLI. Rain date is Sunday.

On September 17, the Matinecock District (Scouts BSA) held their 2nd Touch A Truck recruiting event.  In cooperation with the Kings Park School District and School Supervisor Timothy Eagan, the event was held at the William T Rodgers Middle School. Simultaneously, working with Walt Whitman Mall, they expanded the Touch a Truck to the Huntington community.

Both communities were able to visit various police vehicles, fire trucks, a garbage truck, a street sweeper truck, buses, Military Hummers, Suffolk County Emergency Disaster vehicles, Dump trucks, and Ambulances. At each of the vehicles, the drivers of the trucks were able to discuss safety issues. At the fire truck location, the volunteer firefighters were explaining the tools they use on their truck and let the kids try on extra fireman gear, as did the police and their emergency vehicles.  The school bus and bus companies that were at the touch-a-truck event had a special bus for wheelchairs and the drivers were able to explain how that works.

There were  also volunteers from Cub Scout Pack 539 (Kings Park), Pack 406 (Huntington/Melville), Pack 66 (South Huntington), and Pack 457 (Dix Hills) were able to help promote scouting awareness in the community.

Touch a Truck is back! Families are invited to join us for this exciting community event. Children will have the opportunity to touch, climb on, sit in and experience many of the trucks and vehicles they see in their everyday life and community. Very small children and those with sensitive ears are invited during “quiet time” from 1:00-1:30pm so they can enjoy the vehicles without the noise of horns and sirens.
