From what I've been able to find out, the XJ got the AW4 automatic straight through to EOL behind the 242ci six. Per my 2001XJ FSM, you're supposed to use Dexron II/IIE/III (or Dexron VI, I believe, is the current generation...) The use of ATF +3/+4 tends to cause clutch chatter and slippage, due to the different friction modifiers used.
The AW4 is not and never has been a Chrysler slushbox - it's actually a Toyota design, built by Aisin/Warner (and used on Toyota and Lexus RWD cars and light trucks, particularly the Celica/Supra, pickup, and RWD Toyota Van.)
If you look at the drain plug, it should still have "DII" stamped into the head, indicating the use of Dexron. Do not use any fluid that doesn't match the Dexron spec - if it doesn't say it meets it on the front of the bottle, look at the back. If it doesn't say on the back, then put that bottle down and look at a different fluid.
The Mercon V (new Ford spec) is close enough to Dexron VI that you'll often find both on the same label - but check to make sure the fluid meets the Dexron spec, or buy something that does. You'll need about four quarts for the AW4 on a drain and fill (dump in three and check - odds are, if you haven't dropped the pan, you won't need the whole fourth quart.)
