Pros
As support staff you are treated with respect and your voice is heard. You don't have to deal with attorneys with bad attitudes and unreasonable requests. If an attorney is being rude they are reprimanded. This is not the same environment as a private law firm. I loved my time at the USAO.
Cons
Not a lot of upward mobility. They try to reward Legal Assistants who are competent and do a good job with promotions to Paralegal Specialists but those positions are few. The USAO does try to take care of its support staff as best as they possibly can but so much is dependent on the budget that is controlled in D.C.
Pros
The attorneys were friendly, professional, and always ready to give advice or provide me with work. The work given was meaningful and allowed me to exercise my legal research and legal writing skills. The chance to observe court proceedings was always offered. Overall, it was a fantastic place to intern!
Cons
There are really no cons for this job, it was a great place to work as an first year intern.
