(View full article) The distinctive shapes arose from an everyday problem: cashing checks at banks.In the early 1900s, checks were manually processed - costing time and money. The banking industry looked to automation by creating a standardized solution.  By the mid-1950s, the Stanford Research Institute and General Electric Computer Laboratory created the E-13B font that used a MICR system (magnetic ink character recognition). The success of this solution was a combination of machine and human readability — if a magnetic scanning device failed, a person would need to check the numbers manually. Wheaton typeface by Typodermic Fonts Inc. E-13B has been used on coupons, credit cards, and transportation tickets - even spawning more robust spin-off typefaces.
