What shots does my dog need to get neutered

For your pet’s protection we recommend dogs have their DA2PPV (parvo-distemper) vaccine prior to appointment. The vaccine takes two weeks to take effect so schedule your surgery at least two weeks after the vaccination. If your pet is not vaccinated we will vaccinate at time of surgery.

NIGHT BEFORE SURGERY

1) If the animal normally stays outdoors overnight, he/she must stay indoors the evening before surgery.

2) Animals over 5 months old MUST have food withdrawn at midnight the night before surgery. This ensures that the animal’s stomach is empty by the time he’s put under general anesthesia. This lessens the chances that the animal will vomit and aspirate the vomit into his lungs. If your adult pet has eaten on the morning of surgery, we will refuse surgery.

3) Pediatric animals (5 months or younger) should have food available until 6:00 AM on the morning of surgery. This helps to avoid decreased blood sugar level.

4) Water is okay.

CHECK-IN TIME

1) Check-in time for dogs is 7:15 AM; check-in time for friendly cats in carriers is 7:30 AM and check-in time for feral cats in humane traps is 8:00 AM.

2) We have a very strict surgical schedule that must be followed. It is very important that you arrive on time and follow the Curbside procedures. CHECK IN INSTRUCTIONS:  https://operationpets.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Things-to-Remember-At-Intake-2021.pdf

If you are late we may need to re-schedule your appointment.

3) Plan to be here 30- 40 minutes to an hour in the morning.

4) When you arrive please leave your pet in the car and come to the curb side check-in window. Please have your cell phone with you, we will use the phone to communicate with you while you are at the clinic.

5) You will be asked for your Eligibility Verification and applicable vaccination records.

6) When your paperwork is completed you will be instructed to bring your pet in.

Please note that in the rare event of unforeseen circumstances or emergencies at the clinic there may be a longer wait at check-in or your pet’s surgery may need to be rescheduled.

PRE-SURGERY EXAM

1) Our veterinarian will perform a pre-operative physical examination to make sure that your pet is a good candidate for surgery.

2) If your pet is too fractious to handle, a physical exam will be performed under anesthesia.

3) Feral cats receive their physical exams under anesthesia.

4) If your pet shows signs of illness or if there are any concerns (such as age, a heart murmur, severe upper respiratory infection, obesity, food in stomach) we may refuse surgery if we feel surgery is a health risk.

What shots does my dog need to get neutered
1) Eligibility Verification (see required documentation)

2) You must pay for additional services at check-in. We accept cash, credit or debit card
(no personal check).

3) Cats must be in a clean pet carrier commercially manufactured for the purpose of transporting felines with a secured door. We DO NOT ACCEPT animals in cardboard boxes, plastic totes, laundry baskets, or other non-standard or homemade devices.

4) Do not put multiple cats in one carrier. Your pet needs to be able to lie down comfortably in the carrier after surgery. Your pet may be agitated or aggressive when they go home due to the after-effects of anesthesia. Cats that routinely get along well may not be tolerant of each other in the immediate post-operative period.

5) If you have multiple cats in one carrier when you arrive, you will be asked to transfer your cat(s) to one of our cardboard carriers to go home

What is the best age to neuter a male dog?

The traditional age for neutering is six to nine months. However, puppies as young as eight weeks can be neutered as long as there aren't other health problems. An adult dog can be neutered at any time but there is a larger risk of complications.

What is done when a male dog is neutered?

Neutering, or castration, is the surgical removal of a male dog's testes. Also performed under general anesthesia, it is a simpler surgery than a spay. An incision is made near the front of the scrotum, then the testicles are removed through that incision.

Is it painful for a male dog to be neutered?

Yes. While your dog will not feel any pain throughout the surgery because they will be unconscious under anesthesia, they will need medication to alleviate pain after the procedure. At the end of the surgery, pain medications will be administered to your dog through an injection your vet will provide.

What do I need to know if my dog is neutered?

Most dogs recover relatively quickly from neutering. A little wooziness is not unusual; post-anesthesia anxiety and fussiness is normal. Young dogs may want to return to play as soon as the same day. However, dogs should be kept calm for 10 to 14 days after surgery, or however long your veterinarian recommends.
