What to bring to real id dmv appointment

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) - In October, federal enforcement of the REAL ID Act will take effect in Kentucky. But the rush to get it is causing major delays at local branches.

Kentuckians will need a federally accepted ID to board a domestic flight, enter a military base, or visit a federal building that requires an ID starting Oct. 1. View the list of accepted items here.

Residents can get a REAL ID at 15 regional offices across the state, two of which are located in Louisville. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet also just reopened the Paducah and Hurstbourne offices after a COVID outbreak.

Appointments are preferred, but hard to come by. A group of people lined the Bowman Field DMV branch on Wednesday. Appointments there were full until at least June, and many have been turned away for not supplying the proper documentation.

Once you’ve been able to set up an appointment to apply for a REAL ID, U.S. citizens are required to bring the following documents:

  • Proof of identity: birth certificate, passport, or certificate of citizenship.
  • Proof of Social Security: Social Security card or W2.
  • Two other proofs of address: lease agreement, utility bill, or bank statement.

If the person’s name appears different on any of the documentation, they are required to bring an official marriage license or divorce papers to prove their identities.

Get the Real ID option next time you renew your license

Don’t miss your flight! Federal identification requirements for domestic air travel will change on May 3, 2023. That is when the Transportation Security Administration will no longer accept a standard Oregon driver license or ID card to pass through airport security checkpoints.

If there is any chance you might travel by air in the future, get ready now. Consider getting the Real ID option next time you renew your Oregon driver license, permit or ID card.

How to get the Oregon Real ID option: Make an appointment at DMV2U.Oregon.gov or drop by your local DMV office. You cannot change to Real ID online – you must apply in person and bring the federally required documents to qualify for Real ID.

Please note: Recently issued passports or passport cards may not verify through the national verification system. Please come prepared with additional proof of identity.

Avoid the rush in 2023: Demand will go up for Real ID in 2023 but you can avoid the rush. If your current Oregon license or ID card expires any time within the next 12 months, you are able to renew and add Real ID now! If your driver license or ID card is valid for several more years, and you have a passport that will expire soon, you may want to renew your passport first and then in a few years add Real ID.

Other ID options for air travel: The TSA and other secure federal locations such as military bases will accept other forms of ID – such as a passport, passport card or military ID. For a complete list of federally acceptable ID, visit TSA.gov.

The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is now offering REAL ID compliant driver licenses and identification cards. As mandated by the REAL ID Act of 2005, a REAL ID, U.S. Passport or military ID will be required by the federal government to board domestic flights, or to access some federal facilities starting on May 3, 2023.

If you use your driver license or ID card to get through airport security, or to access a federal facility this will soon change.

California is working to meet the new standards set by the federal government, and will be making available REAL ID compliant driver licenses and identification cards at all DMV locations throughout the State of California.

According to the DMV, residents interested in applying for a REAL ID compliant driver license or identification card must do the following:

  • Make an appointment to visit a field office.
    • Appointments can be made online by visiting www.dmv.ca.gov or by calling 1-800-777-0133.
  • Provide proof of identity (for example: U.S. birth certificate, U.S. passport, certificate of naturalization or citizenship, employment authorization document, permanent resident card, or foreign passport with an approved form I-94).
  • Show two (2) forms of California residency document (for example: utility bill, rental agreement, mortgage bill, medical document).
  • Present proof of your Social Security Number (for example: Social Security Card, W-2 form, SSA-1099 form, Non-SSA-1099 form, Paystub (with full SSN).

Valid California driver licenses and identification cards can be used to board commercial flights until May 3, 2023.

Also, if you have a valid U.S. Passport or U.S. Passport Card, military ID, or other federally approved identification, you may use this as your form of identification to pass a TSA checkpoint at airports nationwide and visit a secure federal building or military installations at any time.  Make sure to check with the federal facility/military base before you visit to verify their identification requirements.

The cost for a REAL ID driver license or identification card is the same as those currently charged for a standard driver license or identification card. REAL IDs will have a special marking of the California grizzly bear with a star on the top right corner of the card.
