Stamps, Luther G. Presley No translations available WHEN ALL OF GOD’S SINGERS GET HOME written in 1937 The Story If I said someone named ‘Presley’ was a noted 20th-Century songwriter born in the South, you would probably guess I was referring to Elvis Presley. Elvis might be nicknamed ‘the King’, but those familiar with southern gospel might guess Luther G. Presley (1887-1974). By some accounts, Luther wrote 1,500 or more gospel songs, beginning officially in 1907 when his first song – “Gladly Sing” – was published. Back then, he was attending music school and directing the choir at the Free Will Baptist Church near Rose Bud, Arkansas (he was born on Beckett Mountain in Faulkner County, AR). Presley (the lyricist) and Virgil O. Stamps (the music writer, of the Stamps-Baxter music publishing company) are most known for the 1937 song, “When The Saints Go Marching In”, but this song is one of my favorite hymns! I want this song be sung at my funeral! My favorite part is that part of the chorus that refers back to another old song, “Home Sweet Home”. The Song Read this hymn, and – today – imagine what songs will be sung in heaven when all of God’s singers get home! What a song of delight in that City so bright CHORUS: As we sing here on earth, songs of sadness or mirth, Having overcome sin, “Hallelujah,
AMEN!” |
