Clue: A trip to El Paso with his young son and wondering what the city might look like years in the future inspired a novel by this author.

Answer: Cormac McCarthy

A trip to El Paso with his young son & wondering what the city might look like years in the future inspired a novel by Cormac McCarthy.

American contemporary author Cormac McCarthy is known for his novels that span the Western and post-apocalyptic genres, so it only makes sense that his visit to El Paso, Texas would inspire one of his most widely read novels of all time, The Road. Ahead of writing The Road, Cormac was known for his 1992 novel, All the Pretty Horses, and went on to critical acclaim with his 2005 novel, No Country for Old Men, which has since become a film.

However, in 2006, he released The Road, which was based on his trip to El Paso in the early 2000s with his young son. While there, he imagined what El Paso would be like 100 years later, and saw "fires up on the hill and everything being laid to waste." The Road became Cormac's 10th novel, and it follows a lone father with his son traveling through post-apocalyptic America while being hunted by cannibals.

He revealed that much of the novel's dialogue was actually based on verbatim conversations he had with his son.
