Whos playing on thursday night football and what channel

The NFL's "Thursday Night Football" games began the season slowly, but the offense has picked up in recent weeks.

That trend should continue into Week 9. Well, at least for one of the teams in action.

The Eagles are set to play the Texans on "Thursday Night Football" as they look to remain unbeaten. The Eagles sport one of the NFL's best and most efficient offenses and enter Thursday's game heavily favored to beat Houston.

Philadelphia and Houston haven't played since the 2018 season, when Doug Pederson was coaching the Eagles and Bill O'Brien was in charge of the Texans. The Eagles won that game 32-30 and hold an all-time record of 5-0 in the series.

Here's everything to know about the Eagles vs. Texans matchup ahead of Amazon's Thursday night NFL broadcast.

Who plays on Thursday Night Football tonight?

  • Matchup: Eagles at Texans
  • Location: NRG Stadium in Houston

The Eagles (7-0) are traveling to Houston (1-5-1) to play the Texans in Week 9 of the 2022 NFL season.

Philadelphia will look to stay unbeaten on the short week after handing the Steelers an impressive 35-13 defeat in Week 8. The Eagles have the NFL's third-best offense in terms of total yardage (395.4 per game) and are averaging 28 points per game (also third-best in the league). They figure to match up well against the Texans, especially since they sport a strong running game while Houston has the NFL's worst run defense.

Jalen Hurts has been one of the most efficient quarterbacks in the NFL, and he is a threat with his legs. He could be uniquely difficult for the Texans' defense to contain.

Speaking of the Texans, they have largely kept their games close this season despite their record. They have lost by more than one score just twice, as Lovie Smith's defense has largely performed well in 2022.

Houston's offense is a bit shakier. Second-year quarterback Davis Mills has struggled with turnovers at times and outside of Dameon Pierce, the offense hasn't been very consistent. They will have their work cut out for them against a Philadelphia defense that has allowed the fourth-fewest yards per game this season.

What time is the NFL game tonight?

  • Date: Thursday, Nov. 3
  • Time: 8:15 p.m. ET

The Texans vs. Eagles game will kick off at 8:15 p.m. ET on Thursday. That will be a 7:15 p.m. local time start for those watching in Texas.

It's noteworthy that the Houston vs. Philadelphia NFL game will kick off just 12 minutes after Game 5 of the World Series between the Astros and Phillies begins. That contest will be played in Philadelphia.

Every Amazon "Thursday Night Football" game for 2022 is scheduled to begin at 8:15 p.m. ET.

What channel is Thursday Night Football on tonight?

  • TV channel (Philadelphia): WPHL (Channel 17)
  • TV channel (Houston): KTXH (Channel 20)
  • Live stream: Amazon Prime Video | DAZN (in Canada)

Amazon Prime Video will broadcast "Thursday Night Football" nationally in 2022. This is part of an 11-year deal that the NFL signed with the streaming service during the offseason. That means fans living in the non-local-area markets for each Thursday night game will need a subscription to Amazon Prime to watch these contests.

That said, viewers located in the regional markets — in this case, Houston and Philadelphia — will be able to watch "Thursday Night Football" on cable TV provided that they are located within the local television market. Philadelphia-area viewers will be able to broadcast the game with WPHL 17 while Houston-based fans can catch it on KTXH, My 20. The game had been scheduled for Fox affiliates in both markets but was bumped to other channels when World Series Game 5 on Fox was bumped back to Thursday.

Amazon has put a lot of resources into its week-to-week broadcast, as legendary play-by-play man Al Michaels will be on the call for the game along with Kirk Herbstreit, who is in his first season as an NFL color commentator. Kaylee Hartung is the sidelines reporter while a studio crew consisting of veteran host Charissa Thompson and former players like Tony Gonzalez, Richard Sherman, Andrew Whitworth and Ryan Fitzpatrick handles pregame, halftime and postgame coverage of the event.

Viewers in Canada will be able to watch the game on DAZN.

NFL live stream for Thursday night game

  • Live stream: Amazon Prime

If you want to watch "Thursday Night Football" in 2022, you are going to need a subscription to Amazon Prime. It will be the exclusive streaming home of "TNF" for the next 11 years, and the games will only be broadcast on over-the-air TV in the local markets of the participating teams.

NFL schedule Week 9

The Eagles vs. Texans game may not be the most exciting matchup to start NFL Week 9, but it will be of interest to watch Philadelphia try to improve to 8-0. It also is taking place during the Phillies vs. Astros World Series, so there is an extra layer to this game, which wouldn't otherwise be a rivalry.

The "Sunday Night Football" game is probably a better game, as it features a couple of teams with 5-2 records. The Chiefs are hosting the Titans, who have had Kansas City's number in recent seasons under Mike Vrabel. The Titans are 3-1 against the Chiefs under Vrabel's guide and 4-1 overall in their last five.

However, the one Titans loss came during the 2020 NFL postseason. So, Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid have the edge in the playoffs.

Finally, "Monday Night Football" will feature a battle between the Ravens and the Saints. Baltimore improved to 5-3 with its "Thursday Night Football" win over the Buccaneers in Week 8 and just added Roquan Smith to its lineup via trade. Meanwhile, the Saints just shut out the Raiders 24-0 to improve to 3-5.
