Glenn answered 15 years ago A five speed manual transmission gearbox was never a factory option in the 1966 Mustang. Four speed manual was the norm for a high-performance transmission in the 1960s. Five speeds didn't appear in US models until the late 1970s to the 1980s. I sounds like you have a '66 fitted with a 5.0 from one of the later model Mustangs. Most first-gen Mustangs you'll see today have automatic transmissions and V8 engines, but the straight-six/three-speed-manual combination was the most common one during the era in which Mustangs were considered cheap-but-sporty commuters.
