About R73.000 @ the dealers. Main items
include new short block(block with crank con rods and pistons) New heads and valves, new waterpump and all down to a new radiator cap! Everything new, nothing reconditioned. Could be more than half if DIY.

American SUV does a service exchange
for about R30000. My spares cost R8000, new pistons bearings etc machining was R2500 and I’m assembling the motor myself so labour is grazed knuckles.

thanx! shoe!! that sounds better!! hope that my Jeep keeps going for very long, motor still sounds great, exhaust is clean and dry no oil, and no oil consumption, however was just curious!! if my jeep needs doing will also do it self
that price is not bad!!
the one bad thing is that to get the motor out, me believe one needs to strip the front out, lights grill etc etc and the motor and box come out together!! a friend did a 3.1
one last
question, what millage did the motor have, and why did it need to be re-done
good luck!! pls keep us posted on progress and start up!!
The cly heads were blown
due to a leaking water pump. I took the front bumper and radiator out unbolted the gearbox and the engine just slipped out. The motor was on 178000km, there was no wear on the bores and the crank was still STD, just required a polish
Oh, the engine stood for 18 months with water in the pots that’s
why I did the bottom end
thanx Bowsie10
good luck with the rest of the project!!
IMHO - stay away from gumtree recons, had major crap with my CRD when I went the gumtree route.... From what I have read American SUV seams the way to go, had my 4.7 serviced there and I am very happy with the service. Just one thing that rang a bell though, it was a "major service", but they
did not replace diff, transfercase or gearbox fluid - guess you have to ask for that specifically - will do it myself if there is time this weekend.
