What code specifically are you getting? It is pretty common for the wire connector and or wire itself to have a poor connection on those cam sensors. I have replaced those little cylinders in the past and the exact same code came on only to find out the wiring had literally fallen apart inside the connector. Joined Jan 20, 2021 · 2 Posts
I changed plugs in mine and that code popped up when I was done. After pulling my hair out for an hour I figured it out. I must have leaned on that plug and broke the wire off inside the connector. I only figured it out after pulling lightly on the wires and one came out. ES - 1st to 4th Gen (1990-2006) Forum for all 1990 - 2006 ES300 and ES330 models. Either way you need to do basic test, otherwise how else do you expect to fix the problem? At the absolute minimum do some continuity tests. Driver School Candidate

this tread is maybe dead but wanted to follow up on it just to share knowledge and experience. I knew this was gonna burn my pockets but also knew if it wasn’t done right Lexus would
have a warranty on the work...plus they got me on the schedule within a week and gave me loaner.they ran test after test...and it was looking like a timing issue..so they thought...after keeping in good contact with me...and about 5 days of testing and cracking open timing belt cover, swapping belt, etc...come to find out all the sensors were good and so was the timing. It was the damn Engine Control Unit ....yup the dang computer crapped out. anyways it’s alll better now and this one was over my head. yes it’s heavy to spend 1350 on a 2002 es300 with 110K on it....but it’s my ol’ trusty n it still runs great. Plus I know where this car has been and how I’ve cared for it...so it was worth it to me. Last edited by NYC ES3; 05-03-20 at 09:07 PM. The following users liked this post: Lexus Champion

Yes ECUs do go bad generally the capacitors dry out or sometimes the driver transistors fail I've repaired a few with this problem. Some don't have any obvious damage and can't be repaired. Will anything can be but the time required to track the problem down is not worth it. Where is camshaft position sensor a bank 1 located?A camshaft position sensor (CMP) is essentially a component in the format of a cylinder, which is often located on the outside of the front cover (at the front of the engine under the valve cover).
What side is camshaft bank 1?Bank 1 is the side of your engine that has the cylinder 1, while sensor B refers to the exhaust camshaft side. Some car manufacturers have their own description of the P0017 code, such as GM (more specifically, Chevrolet).
Which cam sensor is Bank 2?The sensor that has an angled connector is the bank 2 sensor. These sensors can easily be located behind the engine near the firewall. Bank 1 is on the passenger side and Bank 2 ( Angled Sensor ) is located on the driver side of the engine depending on the vehicle model.
Can you reset a camshaft sensor?Evidently, you cannot reset a camshaft position sensor. Therefore, you will need to replace the component if your camshaft malfunctions (check engine light on, acceleration issues, sputtering and stalling, etc.).
