It's rear wheel drive.

The shop manual has you supporting the engine and dropping the engine cradle out from underneath to access the oil pan. So technically the engine is not pulled... but its a lotta work as the suspension needs to be pulled apart, and numerous other details, to remove the cradle. For RWD, you just skip the remove the half shafts steps.

There may be a couple threads on the subject, but I don't recall off hand anyone doing it on a RWD and reporting here.

May I ask why you want to drop the pan?

Well after looking at the job I decided to go ahead and have a reman installed./ Found one for 3k with a one year warranty. Biggest thing is this is the first time in 50 years of twisting wrenches I couldn't do the job myself.

"Couldn't", or just decided it wasn't worth the time and banged up knuckles? I'd think that after 50 years of wrenching you're entitled to decide to pay someone to do the work while you go do something a bit more fun (even if you could still do the job if you really wanted to).

Did you try tightening the bolts? I've seen somewhere that some did that to stop a leak on their oil pan.

Did tightening the bolts work? I've seen lots of mention of people trying this but nothing on the results or torque specs for the pan bolts. I'd like to get ahold of those so I don't overtighten, cracking the gasket and making things worse.

Thanks for validating my findings, ColdCase. I found 105 in-lb which equates to 8.7488252544248 ft-lbs (not to be specific)

Anyhow, has anyone had good luck sealing the pan by simply snugging the bolts? Any bad luck trying to do this (cracked seal, etc)? My leak isn't too bad, maybe 1/4 -1/2 qt every 1k miles, and I can live with that but I'd rather not have any leaks at all.

Nothing all too important other than my experience. Dealer replaced my oil pan gasket before I purchased it used b/c I saw it was leaking the day I went to pick it up. They did not charge me but the dealer indicated it was a $1400 job normally; for whatever that might be worth.
