2014 jeep grand cherokee thermostat replacement cost

Mine happened at 50K. It’s working fine now. A little bummed about the replacement cost of almost $500 ?

That is ludacris. I've never paid more than $20 for a thermostat job replacement.

Next link gives an idea of how much it costs to replace a themostat. Lowest priced part in that list is $25, and they go up to $154 (BMW), but average is about $40. Guess you got lucky with your cars and only had models with cheap thermostats.

Is this a 2.4L thing? The thermostat on the 3.2L doesn't seem that difficult to get to (might have to remove the air cleaner box for easier access, no big deal) and the housing with thermostat is maybe $30-$40.

It's a 2.4L thing
(high failure rate, not sure if it's just on older builds or not. Tough spot, hard to get to)

The next day it came on again, so I went back to the dealer. He ordered a new thermostat and said the 2.4L replacement was a LOT pricier than the 3.6, and quoted me $275. And to think I just got this Jeep two months ago - replaced a 2011 Pruis with 275K miles that never gave me any problems. Oh, well.

I would have thought even a used Cherokee would have come with a 1 year warranty. And power train should be at least 5/60.

Really, 275k not one issue? When it's time, I will be taking a look into a Pruis. By That time they will be bigger and maybe even able to to tow 1000k lbs?

The thermostat is part of the power train? I bought the Jeep with the remainder of the manufacturer's warranty, which was 180 miles!

I had this issue just come up in my 2016 2.4L. (47k) Took it to a dealership and apparently it used to be part of the power train warranty and no longer is as of November 2018. When I booked my appointment for it online, put in my mileage, their estimate said it would be covered. Then I got there and was told it’s no longer covered and it would be just shy of $800. So who knows. Not a dealership I would trust.

2nd thermostat in 3.5 years

2015 Cherokee Limited bought in August 2015. 1st replaced in Jan 2017, second today. Both times same issues as others here. CEL then temp/throttle warnings. Little heat, slow to get the operating temp.

First time I was so shocked by the replacement costfrom the dealer, $650, that I took it to the local shop.. not much different. After researching it’s definitely not a job for someone without the time and resources to do the job! Remove the master cylinder ..

Well, got by for 2 years then happened again. Now have 138k miles. Yes, road warrior. Same shop now $450.. still 3.5 hrs.

Feel that after this much time and this many complaints/failures of a part that has been proven reliable and cheap to replace historically more attention should be made by FCA to resolve it.

Be thankful if you got it replaced under warranty. I missed it the first time due to mileage.

Beware that it will fail again. Never buy this engine, the 6 cyl looks like a straightforward typical tstat replacement..

I bought my 2017 Cherokee 4X4 2.4L 4 months ago with just under 36K miles. Two weeks ago the check engine light came on - P0128. The tech reset it and said "The thermostat did a little hiccup - I reset the code and you're good to go." I didn't give it a second thought, but three days later the light came on again. I took it back in, and the tech said "Looks like a bad thermostat - we'll order you a new one." I had the work done today by the Jeep dealership in Terre Haute, IN. 2.5 hours, $297. I told him "So this isn't part of the drive train?" He replied, "Nope.". I said, "You'd think with this recurring issue that the Jeep higher-ups would figure out that next time we buy another vehicle maybe we'll buy one where the manufacturer fixes problems when they show up in a lot of vehicles." He shrugged.
Still, from reading other posts on time and cost, I got off reasonably well.

Wow. I have to go back to the 80s to recall a time that I needed to replace a thermostat on a car. I thought thermostats failing were a thing of the past, but I guess not. :surprise:

Related question, since I've had the thermostat replaced and the problem seems to have gone away (the check engine light hasn't come back on). Did the dealer replace the faulty thermostat with the same thermostat, or have they updated or fixed whatever problem caused the old thermostat to fail? What's to say the new one won't fail as well?

Thermostats have been going bad since my 68 Olds. Doubt there is any “updated” part, but who knows...
