This week the 2021 Work Truck Show from Indiana went virtual with truck brands announcing changes to their work trucks. Publisher Tim Esterdahl had a virtual ticket to the show and was in for quite a surprise when GM announced some big changes to their powertrain offerings for the 2022 Chevy Silverado and 2022 GMC Sierra pickup trucks.

Leaked or purposeful, these 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 engine changes are big news!

2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 engine changes

Everyone has been talking about how we might see interiors more similar to the Tahoe, and we’ve seen some spy footage of the new exterior. So, we expected to hear about interior and exterior changes. 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 engine changes were not what we were expecting. At all.

And yet, here we are.

GM announced they will be dropping the 4.3-liter V-6 and the 5.3-liter V-8.

The new standard? A 2.7-liter turbo and an 8-speed transmission.

Before you get all whiney about the 2.7, keep in mind, Ford offers a 2.7 and it’s a fantastic engine. Because of the turbos, it gets a lot of torque and pulls really well. A lot of customers really like it. However, keep in mind, the 2.7 in the Ford is a 6-cylinder twin-turbo, whereas the 2.7 in the Chevy is a 4-cylinder with one turbo. That’s kind of a big difference. Regardless, it’s Ford’s biggest seller, and with Chevy it’s OK but still better than the 4.3.

The outgoing 5.3-liter V-8 is the one with active fuel management, which a lot of customers really liked. It will be replaced with a 5.3-liter dynamic fuel system, which is supposed to be better and have the ability to turn cylinders off and on.

There will also be an available 6.2-liter V-8. This engine has been out there and available for a while and comes on the TrailBoss. It is really powerful, people like it, and it’s not as bad on fuel as you’d think.

GM will also be dropping the 6-speed transmission. And replacing some 8-speed transmissions in the Silverado and Sierra.

Any news for the light-duty diesel?

Because this was a work truck show, and the diesel is usually only offered on the light-duty consumer trucks, there was no news on 3.0-liter diesel in this week’s announcement.

To sum things up…

For the 2022 model year, GM will offer four powertrains for consumer trucks and three powertrains in their work trucks. And of course, there is still the controversy about having to drop the transmission at 150k miles to check the fuel pump belt in the 3.0-liter Duramax diesel.
