On the outside, the current Honda Civic took a step away from its Accord-based design, giving it some uniqueness within the lineup. This included a smaller grille with a more prominent “H” emblem, a more rounded nose, a shallower-raked rear glass, bold taillights, and a clean and clutter-free backside. The hatchback model is nearly identical, but its one-piece hatch and unique taillights set it apart. With this exterior design still very new, we expect no changes to the 2023 Civic. In contrast, the 2023 Civic Type R features a more mature look compared to the prior Civic generation. Functional air inlets, a sleeker rear spoiler, and three-outlet exhaust help set the car apart from the standard Civic hatchback. Wider fenders and exclusive colors like Historic Championship White send a message that the Type R is no ordinary Civic model.  Inside, the current Civic is sharp and simple with its thin and clutter-free dash that boasts a standard 7-inch dash-top touchscreen that’s upgradable to 9 inches. It also features a trio of round HVAC knobs, a dash-width chicken-wire-like insert, a sporty three-spoke steering wheel, and more. Standard tech includes a 7-inch touchscreen, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and a four-speaker audio system. We expect the 2023 Civic to arrive with the same look and features. The 2023 Civic Type R interior features unique red sport seats in a suede-like material and matching red carpet and trim. For 2023, each Type R will get a serialized plate mounted on the dash. Unlike the normal Civic, Type R models will come with track-inspired features like a data-logging computer, a special rpm display, a stopwatch, and the ability to share driving videos. The current Civic comes standard with a 158-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT). Moving into the Sport and higher trims, it gains a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 180 hp. We expect these powertrains to remain in the 2023 Civic, as well as when it comes to the higher-performance Civic Si. 2023 Civic Type R horsepower will come in at 315 hp with 310 lb-ft of torque. That's a gain of 9 hp and 15 lb-ft compared to the previous generation Type R. The standard turbocharged 2-liter 4-cylinder engine is paired with a 6-speed manual transmission. Honda says it will be the most powerful production car ever sold in the U.S. The current Civic hasn’t been through IIHS crash testing yet, but we know it comes well-equipped with the latest safety gear. Its standard equipment includes automatic emergency braking, active lane control, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beams. Buyers can add blind-spot monitors and parking sensors. We expect the standard and optional safety gear to remain the same in the 2023 Civic. Pricing & Release DateHonda hasn't announced a release date yet for the 2023 Civic, but we do know that the next-gen Civic Type R will go on sale this fall. We currently estimate a fall release date for the standard Civic sedan and Civic hatchback. We expect the 2023 Civic’s pricing to remain close to the current model's pricing, which ranges from $23,365 to $30,865 (destination fees included). As for the 2023 Civic Type R, we estimate a price increase compared to the previous MSRP of about $38,000. Whether or not Type R prices exceed $40,000 or $43,000 remains an open question. However, if history is any indication, then we predict that the new models should start appearing by the end of August and maybe into October depending on any supply chain issues. As for the trim levels, the 2023 Honda Civic should carry the same five main flavors – LX, Sport, EX, Touring, and Si – but the return of the Civic Type R hatchback is the biggest news. The 2023 Honda Civic Type R carries a new look that’s based on the 11th-generation Honda Civic Hatchback body style. Honda has been mum on any real details for the forthcoming fire-breathing Civic. But we expect that it will still churn out over 300 hp and continue its reign as a top hot hatchback. Albeit with more sophisticated driving dynamics like the new Civics have. How much will the 2023 Honda Civic cost?Considering automakers tend to increase the prices of their model every year, Honda is no exception. As such, we expect that the base Civic LX should start at around $22,700, which is $150 more than the current 2022 model. The other trim levels will likely align accordingly with the Sport trim carrying a tag of around $24,000 and the EX starting at around $25,700. The top-trim Touring model will inch closer to the $30,000 mark. Kelley Blue Book predicts that Civic Si and Civic Type R models should start at around $30,000 and $40,000, respectively. However, with the current market conditions and lackluster supply, we wouldn’t be surprised if dealerships slapped markups on these special models. 2023 Honda Civic changesWith the latest Civic Type R set to debut this summer, we don’t expect any other real changes to the 2023 Honda Civic overall. As stated before, the commuter sedan was redesigned for the current model year. So aside from any new possible exterior colors or small additions, the Civic should remain largely the same. Will there be a 2023 Honda Civic Hybrid?There is a new Honda Civic Hybrid model coming for the European market, which could make its way across the pond in 2023. Honda did kill the Insight after the 2022 model year, so it’s possible that a new Civic Hybrid would arise with the 11th-generation body style and the same 1.5-liter hybrid powertrain. For now, it’s all speculation as Honda hasn’t noted any concrete plans for a hybrid Civic. However, with the electrified automotive future on the horizon, we wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if the Japanese automaker dropped one on us next year.
