How to make a bracelet pull tie

Learn how to tie a simple sliding knot, ideal for both bracelets and necklaces that you want to be adjustable, or where you don’t want to use metal clasps. The easiest of all sliding knots to learn, it is made using each end to create an overhand knot around the main body of the bracelet or necklace.

I wrote my first ever craft tutorial in 2012 on how to tie a square sliding knot. From that moment I was hooked on making DIY tutorials. That post still get traffic.

So when I wanted to share a sneak peek of the content from my new Macrame EBook, it had to be the sliding knots. I’m sharing all three versions from the book, including the barrel knot and an updated version of the square sliding knot. You will need:

-Cord. I’m using paracord in the photos, but anything 1mm or thicker will work, in waxed cotton, satin or knotting cord.

Its always better to allow more cord than you think you need. I suggest using twice as much as the desired length.

How to tie a simple sliding knot:

1.Cross the ends over. I always think the ends look like the ears of a bunny rabbit!

2.Loop the right end (or “ear”) over, under and around the main part of the cord

3.Then feed the end through the loop to create an overhand knot

4.Pull firmly, but so that the cord can still slide through the knot easily

5.Determine the size your bracelet needs to be by making sure it fits over the widest part of your hand. If you are making a necklace, make sure it goes over your head.

6.Then repeat steps 2 & 3 with the left end. You can make the knot right up to the previous one, or slightly further away. Just be careful not to move the previous knot, or your bracelet might end up the wrong size.

7.Pull the knot tight

8.Knot each end to make the bracelet easier to tighten. You can even add beads!
