Illinois drivers must renew their license plates every

There are two different kinds of licenses needed – a driver’s license and a car license plates. Last month I talked about Driver’s license. This month it is about car license plates.

1. How often do you have to renew your plates? Every year. You will automatically receive a notice in the mail to renew. You also may have a notice sent to you electronically. Go to www.cyberdriveillinois.com. They really prefer this as it saves our state money if mailed. And we all know Illinois needs money.

2. Is the notice sent automatically if you sign up? Yes.

3. How often is an emission test required? Every two years. But note that an emission test is only required in Chicago metropolitan area and collar communities. A notice is sent by the EPA when it is required. This is mandatory for all cars. Otherwise your plates will not be renewed.

4. How old or new must a car be to avoid the emission test? All cars must have it, even if the car is brand new.

5. The cost for Illinois plates is $101. They need to be renewed by the date on the sticker on your plate. Years ago a Naperville officer stopped me. He said my plate had expired. Then proceeded to give me a fine. I came home and told my husband, and he said, “Oh, yes. It came in the mail and I have been intending to put it on your plate.” I was not happy!

6, One good thing about the emission test is they give you your license sticker right then. I was also asked by the EPA to be sure to tell people to clean your license plate before attaching the sticker.

People wonder why my Naperville car has Florida license plates. When you see me, ask me. It takes more room to explain than the space PN provides.
