Introducing the Master 5401 Key Storage Box. This simple-to-use unit is ideal for the storage of a small number of keys, and is operated via a 4- digit combination lock. The Master 5401 comes factory-set to 0000. To change the code, input your 0000 and open the unit up. To change the combination, push the Reset button across and up. Now select any 4-digit code of your choice. In this instance, we’re changing the code to 1001. Once your combination has been put in, return the Reset button to its original position. With the door open, check your code several times, to make sure that it’s correct before locking the unit.

2.0 out of 5 stars Great Idea, Poor Design

First off, the idea behind this lock is awesome. The engineering behind it is horrible, this little lock needs a redesign. First off the lock is a Bluetooth smart lock and can not be accessed remotely which is silly however the lock does not advertise that it can be remotely accessed. The app interface is ok and I mean that with reservations, it could be much better. In order to access the lock with the app you have to physically push the button on the lock to wake it up and then you can program with app. That simply sucks when it is pouring down rain or 115 degs outside. The mounting is sturdy and the lock will surely keep honest people out of it. My biggest concern with the lock is the storage area is stupidly TO SMALL! So small it made it difficult to get a tool inside for the concrete screws. If you stripped out a screw well, your screwed because there is no space inside this unit to deal with it. Works great for single house key however forget automotive keys, automotive remotes (which is pretty much every vehicle built after 2008, key rings or multiple keys. If the mark made a lock that was truly a smart lock (z-wave or WiFi) and the cargo area was twice the space this lock would not exist any longer. I would pay triple for that lock box. Other than that it is a decent lock box for the price.

There are a lot of different digital locks on amazon and this one i think is one of the top. Very easy to set up and it works. Others similar to the Lockin don't seem to link up Bluetooth wise to new phones. Very bad directions. This one from Masterlock is simple and can be set up with different codes for other family members. It also notifies you when it is used. Sending others back that don't work.

I bought this key safe box for my 91 yo father who has lost his house keys twice in the last 2 months. I figured that putting a key in the box outside his door was the best way to ensure that he'd never lock himself out. From the moment I received the box, I was impressed with it. It is heavy and has Bluetooth connectivity that allows it to be programmed from the Master Lock app. Plus you can download access logs to see exactly who and when used it. It can allow for several (I think up to 5 or 7) different access codes that can be personalized and assigned to different people allowing each person their own code and the ability to use their own phone to unlock the box via Bluetooth. It has lots of customization options and works better than I expected. The lighted keypad is a easy to see; the buttons are big and sound a tone and blink when you push them; and the ability to create long or short PINs is a plus. It feels sturdy and I think it would keep whatever you put inside it safe. I do have a couple constructive comments though... First, to open it, you have to grab it from both sides and pull on the flared edges of the door which folds down to open it. Though not a big deal, this would seem kind hard for someone with grip issues. I assume it's built like this so you can't easily take a pry bar to the key safe, which I understand, but it also makes it a little harder to use for people with disabilities or the elderly... Or if it got wet, it might just be a little hard to open for a regular person if it got slippery. Maybe if the door popped open slightly when disarmed, that would be helpful and make opening the door a little easier. Lastly, I have more of an installation tip than a criticism... maybe a criticism of the directions. When you install the Master Lock app and assign phone privileges to the app, make sure that you set the privileges for the app to access your phone's Bluetooth all of the time, not just when the app is running. I know this sounds strange, but I had all sorts of connectivity issues with the app communicating with the box when the app only had privileges when the app was on. The app would recognize the box but it wouldn't update it consistently with the new passcodes. It would download the access log, but I sometimes had a problem unlocking the box using the app. The app would see the key safe, but didn't seem to stay connected to it. The BT connectivity was very shoddy until I changed the apps privileges. Once I did that, the app recognized the box consistently and worked as designed. Unfortunately, I don't remember seeing anything in the directions about this tidbit, and there's no troubleshooting section in the included fold out directions to help you. The directions are poor and basic at best and barely helped you through the install process. Maybe if I had known how to set the app's permissions from the directions, my comments would be different, but unfortunately, that tidbit of info isn't there and so it tainted my experience until I figured it out. It was so bad I even considered returning the key safe as defective. Luckily I installed the app on my Android phone and noticed the "allow use all the time" privilege that I didn't see as a choice so I didn't select it the first time I installed the app on my Dad's Android phone. (My Dad has a Motorola phone, and I have a Samsung). Once I went into the app's privileges and fixed it, all the issues I had went away. Needless to say, it's working now and I think it'll provide the security that my Dad needs.

Updated review - I fixed this issue myself with a specialized set of drill driver bits. I reached out to Master lock requesting a replacement and they were also responsive. Fixing my review in response (but leaving original)

------------
This product was pretty neat and it satisfied my needs as an STR host, right up until this piece of plastic in the bottom of the box fell out... and then suddenly the lock became a useless brick.

It was weird because the box suddenly stopped locking and I could not figure out why. All the lights worked. The app, and everything seemed normal. But it turns out this little piece of plastic is crucial for pressing the button to activate the lock - and without it, the lock will not under any circumstances lock EVEN IF YOU USE THE APP. Making it A TOTALLY USELESS BRICK.

The plastic didn't even break. It just fell out somehow during use. And somehow because of the design it's absolutely impossible to put it back into the box. I took all the screws out, used a drill hammer and several screwdrivers for levers trying to force the slots back together, but just examining the design it really doesn't look possible for a person to put it back in. I don't know how it fell out in the first place, seems to be a design flaw. But now that it's out, the lock has become a $150 paper weight.

I just got the new Bluetooth 5440D lock. I couldn't remove it from the packaging to to inspect it without unlocking the shackle. The combination printed on the front worked at first to unlock the door but there is no way to release the shackle inside. I tried the printed instructions for manual shackle removal but they didn't work. It is very difficult to try to work on the lockbox while it is contained in the packaging and it has a 5 second default timeout on combination access. After a couple of hours of negative results I contacted Master Lock and they indicated that it would only work from the App. I downloaded the app and tried it and still no luck. I changed the default timeout to 10 seconds to help remove some of the major frustrations with trying to remove the shackle. Still nothing and no indications of what the trouble might be. I called Masterlock again and they said it might be Very Very difficult to pull the shackle even if it was unlocked. I was successfully able to confirm that the shackle was ready to be removed through the app and applied 60 -80 lbs of force and it finally released. While I had it out I put some Dow 111 on it so it would never have that problem again. (Master Lock should have already done this). I closed it and tried to remove the shackle with the App once again. Now it works intermittently and my wife was able to open it after a couple of attempts. Mechanically it is working but the App seems to timeout and reset without notice, so you wind up fruitlessly tugging on it a lot. Then I tried the mechanical method of opening the shackle and it doesn't work. I changed the Primary code and it still doesn't work. I tried many different ways of opening the shackle without success. I then tried the Backup Master Code using the printed instructions and it opened once. I tried it again and it failed every time and the clear button flashed red. I waited another half hour and tried it once more and it worked. The Primary code has never worked. I will call Master lock about it again but their Tech's last word on it was that maybe it was broken. I don't think so because the backup master code works. I think they have a serious problem with the lock's software. I hope nobody ever needs to get to safety quickly behind this lock or is caught out in the weather because this lock would not function as an effective safety device. Why does it not have a manual safety release inside the lock box like the old lock boxes had? It seems like a critical over site. If I am able to get the manual release from the keypad working after calling Master Lock again I will post the solution here and on the other websites.

1.0 out of 5 stars Encountered several incidents

Reviewed in Canada 🇨🇦 on July 7, 2021

I bought 5 of these boxes and really regret it.
First incident, I installed the box and shackle showed lock. The lockbox disappeared with key missing. The shackle unlocked or something.
Second incident, I tried to install and the shackle seemed confused. It did lock although it shows lock so I was stuck standing around for 15 mins trying to lock. Everytime I think it's locked, it was easily pulled off.
Third incident, gave someone the code to enter and non of the codes worked. I had to go out of my way to install another box.
Fourth incident, gave contractor the code to get in at one of the properties. They stood there trying for so long and couldn't get in.

I just don't get why this works sometimes and then fails. Very inconsistent and causing me to waste time going out of my way.

1.0 out of 5 stars Mandatory App Migration: Two Lock Boxes In, Only One Came Out

Reviewed in Canada 🇨🇦 on June 7, 2020

I have a couple of these lock boxes. No problems with the first one. I was able to add one guest to the second box; the second guest ended up in a state where they were able to open the box using Bluetooth once, after that the app seemed to think the guest needed an invite but wouldn't accept a new invite because it already happen. Also, briefly, the app (Master Lock Vault eLocks) claimed that the second lock box belonged to somebody else. So, rubbish back end systems.

However, after waiting a while, tried to add the second guest again. This time, it turned out that Master Lock has a new app (Master Lock Vault Home), and if you want to add guests, you need to "migrate" to the new app. So, "migrate" from "eLocks" to "Home". Both lock boxes disappear from eLocks; only the first lock box appears in Home. Master Lock support is unable to help, so, basically, RIP second lock box.

4.0 out of 5 stars Blue Tooth good thus far

Reviewed in Canada 🇨🇦 on October 23, 2018

We received the product right away. Easy install and easy setup. The APP to install is okay and the setup is straight forward. We are using it for Contractors and repairmen at an apartment building and plan on changing the code often. Will wait to get their feedback on how easy it was for them to get access but so far so good. My only issue is the Key area is very big but not very deep. If you have a Key RING it is hard to shut the door unless you position it just right. Minor complaint but annoying when you are in a rush.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quick and easy to install

Reviewed in Canada 🇨🇦 on May 30, 2019

...the only minor glitch was a firmware update to the lock. I discovered the the Bluetooth connection from my smartphone actually worked better six feet from the lock than right up against it. Another issue is that the lock will auto-lock when the door is closed, but it will also auto-lock if the door is "almost" closed. If you're not quick enough to totally close the door before it auto-locks then you have to unlock it before you can totally close the door.

Other than that, the lock is easy to configure, install on a wall and to use.

4.0 out of 5 stars So far, works as described

I'm a realtor and this lockbox has been solid since purchase. The temp codes work well. Someone was suggesting the app was not great… I would partially agree. However sending a guest a temp code DOES NOT require all the work another reviewer described. The app sends a text to the guest with the temp code… easy. Guest does not require the app… just the ability to receive a txt.

What do you do when your Master Lock won't open?

Please try resetting the lock again by following the instructions below:.
Place lock in the open position..
On the back of the lock, slide the reset lever into the “up” position..
Insert the shackle into the lock and squeeze firmly twice to “clear” it..
Pull up on the shackle to open the lock..
Enter your new combination..

How do you unlock a Master combination lock if you forgot the code?

You can visit a Master Lock Distributor / Retailer or submit a Lost Combination form. Bring your lock to the retailer. Be sure that it is not attached to anything. If you do not bring the lock, or it is attached to something, we will not release the combination.
