Acute Care Nurse Practitioners attend to adolescents and adults across the continuum of care, including urgent care centers, critical care units and inpatient medical-surgical or specialty units. Acute care offers a high-intensity environment that requires fast-paced critical thinking skills, which you will develop during this program.

This certificate option prepares registered nurses as advanced practice leaders and interprofessional team members to provide care for acute and critically ill patients and their families. Offered only as a part-time option, this certificate can be completed in five semesters.

Mount Carmel College of Nursing’s Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AG-ACNP) Certificate Program is designed for Master's prepared registered nurses who wish to pursue an acute care focused, advanced practice nursing role. The Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner provides health care services to adult patients with complex acute, critical and chronic health conditions in high acuity settings that require intensive monitoring and therapeutic intervention.

These advanced professionals are typically employed in hospital settings, including intensive care, sub-acute care and emergency care but may also be employed in ambulatory, outpatient and rehabilitative settings to provide population-based care across the healthcare continuum for the purpose of restoring individuals to their maximal health potential, following an acute care episode. The program is offered in a hybrid model, with both online and face-to-face coursework.

Upon completion of the Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Certificate Program track, graduates will have the knowledge and skills to:

  • Deliver competent healthcare to diverse young adult, adult and older adult populations for individuals, communities and systems
  • Use epidemiological, social and environmental data to draw inferences to effectively assist patients in achieving and/or maintaining optimum health or to stabilize chronic health conditions
  • Facilitate and demonstrate the use of evidence-based practice in nursing
  • Design health promotion and disease prevention clinical programs for young adult, adult and older adult populations experiencing acute, critical, and chronically ill diseases
  • Evaluate nursing practice and health care to produce quality outcomes of evidence-based acute and chronic care services for individuals, communities and systems
  • Enhance leadership in clinical practice
  • Use ethical decision making in the delivery of acute, critical, and chronically ill care services for vulnerable populations
  • Collaborate with intra- and interdisciplinary professionals to achieve quality outcomes in advanced nursing practice
  • Demonstrate scholarly inquiry through verbal and written communication in clinical scholarship

* Students are not required to have a preceptor(s) setup prior to applying to their program of choice, however, students must have a preceptor in place at least 4 weeks prior to the start of their first clinical course. It is the responsibility of the student to find a preceptor for each clinical experience. The Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner - Advanced Placement Post Master's Certificate online program from YSU qualifies practicing nurse practitioners to take the American Nurses Credentialing Center and/or the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners AG-ACNP certification exams. Following national certification, you are eligible to be granted prescriptive authority through the Ohio Board of Nursing.

This online AG-ACNP certificate program includes a supervised clinical practicum consisting of 540 hours in a variety of acute care settings. You will build on your ability to care for adults with complex and chronic conditions in high acuity and specialty areas.

You will learn to provide comprehensive and holistic primary care to a culturally diverse population while studying health promotion, health maintenance, and management of common health problems with an emphasis on physical assessment findings for determining and planning patient care needs.

  3. Regular admission requires a cumulative undergraduate grade point average of at least 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) and verification of work experience
    • 1,000 clinical hours of practice as a Registered Nurse prior to registering for the first specialty course
    • If GPA is 2.7 – 2.99, 2,000 clinical hours of practice as a Registered Nurse prior to registering for the first specialty course
  4. Official transcripts from all colleges/universities attended
  5. Verification of a current, unencumbered RN license and expiration date in the state in which the student is licensed and practices and will be completing practicum hours

Clinical Hours and Experience

Applicants will complete a Supplemental Employment Verification form as part of the application process. This is used to verify clinical hours and experience.

  • Current BLS certification, immunizations, drug screen and criminal background checks are maintained while in the program annually
  • Current ACLS certification required prior to the start of clinicals

The YSU online nursing programs must meet the standards of the state(s) in which authority is approved to provide education and may only admit students from those states. Online nursing students must complete the program in the state of Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Michigan, or Florida.

NURS 7039: Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner 2

Duration: 7 weeks

Knowledge, advanced skills and professional behaviors required to provide comprehensive and holistic care to a culturally diverse, acutely and chronically ill adult population (young adult to frail elderly) is emphasized. Clinical manifestations of and patient response to particular patient care problems (e.g., integumentary, infectious disease) with emphasis on physical assessment findings for determining differential diagnosis and planning of patient care needs, health promotion and health maintenance.

NURS 7040: Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner 2 Practicum

Duration: 7 weeks

This is a supervised clinical practicum consisting of 180 hours in an acute care setting. It is designed to provide the intermediate Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner student with beginning experience in integrating the management of acutely ill adults with complex and chronic conditions in high acuity and specialty areas.
