Printer scanner and photocopier all in one

The best all-in-one printer we've tested is the Canon imageCLASS MF743Cdw, a color laser model with a sturdy build and many features. You can connect to this printer via USB, Wi-Fi, or Ethernet and even print directly from a USB flash drive. Though a little slow, its ADF-equipped scanner produces high-quality scans and supports single-pass duplex scanning, so you don't need to scan double-sided sheets manually. As for its printing performance, it produces outstanding quality black and color documents and is fast, printing up to 29 pages per minute. The toner cartridges yield a large number of prints, around 3000 black and 2000 color, so you don't need to worry about frequent maintenance. The cartridges are expensive; however, they contain the drum, meaning you won't need to spend extra to replace the drum separately.

Like most laser printers, it isn't ideal for photo printing, as printed pictures look grainy and lacking in detail. If you need to print photos or posters, we recommend the Epson EcoTank Photo ET-8550, an all-in-one inkjet model. It prints amazing photos and supports various paper sizes up to 13" x 19". It's also a supertank model, meaning it has refillable ink tanks instead of cartridges. The ink tanks yield thousands of pages, and replacement ink is cheap, so you won't need to worry about high maintenance costs. There are a couple of tradeoffs, though, like the lack of an automatic feeder, slower printing speed, and higher price tag. If cost is a concern, you can save some money with the cheaper Epson EcoTank Photo ET-8500 variant, which performs identically but only supports paper sizes up to 8.5" x 11".

Who doesn't want to reduce the number of machines around the house or the office that they need to keep fed, watered, filled, and powered up? (Pets and plants are enough of a commitment.) Any printer, by definition, can of course print. Not every printer, however, can help shuffle your old fax machine, copier, and flatbed scanner off to the great recycling bin in the sky.

All-in-one printers (AIOs) are these magic machines. AIOs add key functions beyond just printing, which is why they're also called multifunction printers (MFPs). All of them can copy, and because copying requires a scanner, most can scan as well. Many add faxing to the mix along with other features, such as scanning to and printing from cloud sites. They range from small, under-$100 models suitable for home or home-office use to floor-standing behemoths that can anchor a corporate department, thanks to suitably large paper capacities and maximum duty cycles (in essence, suggested print limits) of tens of thousands of pages a month.
