Starbucks strawberries and cream frappuccino in bottle

Starbucks strawberries and cream frappuccino in bottle
Starbucks Ireland and UK have introduced bottled Frappuccino drinks into stores. Going into one of my favorite Starbucks in Dublin today I was greeted with lots of new products and merchandise items including brand new bottled Frappuccinos in ‘Mocha’ and ‘Strawberry’ flavors. Opening the bottles the smell of chocolate and sweet strawberry was quite strong. Pouring the bottles into two glasses the consistency seemed think and creamy and I was very excited to try these as I’ve only seen them in the US market before now. I must say that Frappuccinos are probably my favorite drinks at Starbucks, in particular Mocha Frappuccino, so this was the first one I wanted to try.

Tasting the mocha it hit me as a very familiar flavor, but not that of a Frappuccino more of a bottled Discoveries taste. This really was a surprise, I had a mocha Frappuccino earlier today and this drink just didn’t taste a bit like it. Reading off the ingredients I found out why, it’s simply – Milk, Arabica Coffee and Chocolate flavorings. Frappuccinos are made with a ‘base’ that gives it the primary ‘Frappuccino’ taste, these drinks were probably (like all other Starbucks bottles items) made with the VIA type powder talked about in Howards book Onward. This is different than whats in the Frappuccino base which also has thickeners, stabilizers and flavorings. I finished the bottle but was disappointed with it, so moved on to the Strawberry. Sadly if I was disappointed with the Mocha, the Strawberry was nothing short of an embarrassment to the Starbucks name. It was a sickly sweet drink, that tasted like laboratory made fake strawberry flavor added to some milk. Again it hit me as a familiar taste, but not of Discoveries this time, it was a taste from my childhood that of the red strawberry powder you added to milk for milkshakes. The person I tried these with actually said that you can go to the grocery store buy strawberry powder, add it to milk and have the exact same drink for a tiny fraction of the price. It’s to sugary, to the point were it hurt my teeth and far to sweet and fake strawberry tasting that I honestly didn’t finish it.

In conclusion I’d like to say that these drinks are OK, the mocha is quite drinkable, however they DO NOT taste in ANY way like a Mocha Frappuccino or Strawberries and Cream Frappuccino. If you are looking for a drink that tastes like a Frappuccino do not get these bottled versions, you will be very disappointed. These drinks taste exactly like Starbucks Discoveries and if I didn’t know better just seem like repackaged Discoveries with Frappuccino written on them. This was a big disappointment for me as I thought about getting a few bottles to bring home so I can have Frappuccinos between my Starbucks visits, but that will just not be happening now. These bottles are €3 ($4.07) each and for the flavor and quality of the items are just not worth it. I can’t see myself buying an item that doesn’t taste like it’s advertised. Sorry Starbucks, this one is a big hit and miss.

I was desperate, they were hard to find at the time. But too expensive I wouldn’t buy again

The coffee itself is delicious...but the picture shown is deceptive. The product is not shrink-wrapped, it's in 3 separate cardboard carriers with 4 bottles each. I had wanted to stack them in my pantry, but that's not going to happen.

I think it's important to note that these are the SMALL bottles of frappuccino. They only stand about 6" high. This is stated in the ad (it says they are 9.5 oz bottles) but depending on what you're used to seeing in your local stores, these might be a shock to those accustomed to buying the 12 oz ones and not realizing that the pricing can't be compared apples-to-apples.

Still the price per ounce is good, at least compared to what I can get them for locally. The individual 12 oz bottles here in CA run about $3.29 and these 9.5 oz bottles work out to $1.66 each (at the price I paid; of course prices vary on Amazon from time to time, so YMMV). Per ounce, the big bottles are about 27c/oz and the small bottles here are 17c/oz. So that's about 1/3 off the usual price in my area.

I actually like that the bottles are a little smaller than what we can get in stores, especially since my teenagers really like these. We can still get our coffee fix with a little less sugar and caffeine.

I have been buying this in the store (yeah, don't look at me like that - I don't buy it for myself - I buy it for a friend of mine - I'm not a fan of Starbucks products myself). This is exactly the same as what you buy in the same only *several* dollars cheaper. The outside shrink wrap is slightly different than the store product (what's pictured is what I received - at the store - the shrink wrap is clear) ~ Item arrived under "Prime" shipping from Amazon - no problem at all. Very very happy!

I bought the Starbucks Frappuccinos one time, and I went through them so quickly, found them to be only 2 sips per bottle, and yes they were two delicious sips, but I never bought them again because the shipping was amazingly high, $15 to be precise for one package of 25 bottles.

Now, they could have continued to charge the same prices, and I'd have to stop buying them like I know many other people, but what I found today really impressed me.

You will now see they lowered the shipping by more than half which I'm really happy about, so I am buying it again, so kudos to them for listening to the customers.

That's how you make the big bucks :)

In theory this sounds great. I mean getting a week or two's worth of coffee delivered right to your door sounds amazing.
However, the reality of the situation is that you end up purchasing a bundle of 12 very fragile glass containers of brown sticky liquid. The packaging method is to place a single strip of bubble wrap around the pack of bottles. When they arrived I should have known by the discolored box, but curiosity got the best of me and I opened it to find quite a mess. You see, when one or two of the bottles break, the other bottles will continue to grind up their glass remnants into a fine glass powder. This powder is then equally dispersed around the inside of the package so that all of the bottles get coated with it. As you can imagine the coffee which used to be contained in the glass creates an excellent adhesive for the glass powder to adhere to, all over each bottle. Essentially, you end up removing the few non-broken bottles with gloves, and soaking them in a sink for a few hours. Then, you must carefully cut the plastic lid seals off in order to remove the glass shards/powder that gets underneath them. In other words, if this sounds like a good time, then you'll love these.
