2012 jeep grand cherokee upper control arm replacement

The coil spring over the shock will likely block pulling the through bolt for the UCA all the way out. You will likely need to disconnect the bottom of the shock and loosen the bolts on top, to tilt the strut outward at the bottom to give the 1/2" you need to pull the bolt the whole way out and put it back in again for the new UCA.

The nut on the through bolts for the UCA are accessible from the engine compartment.
The front nuts, you have to remove the TIPM/PDC, PCM and its stand to get to the nut on the passenger side and on the driver's side you need to remove the Air Filter box.
The rear nuts are accessible in a gap that is very hard to see in the engine compartment, I had to get a step stool to get enough of an angle to see around this little corner and I'm 6'3". You'll need the step stool to even reach it while you have it on jack stands...

The rear bolts do appear like they might be on the other side of the Heat shield at the back of the engine, that wraps forward on the sides to form those pockets on either side, in those pockets. Totally deceiving, they are not there. Throw in the FSM talks about the heat shield, I ended up thinking I'd find the nut at the bottom of the pocket and waste 2 hours pulling everything to get the equipment out of the pocket on the passenger side only to find no bolt, I get a step stool and pear into the gap/corner on the front side of the heat shield and there it was....

The UCA is not adjustable for Alignment, the Lower control arm is adjustable and used to align the vehicle. But replacing it can effect alignment, so you want to get an alignment done afterwards...

For the bushings in the UCA, they need to be torqued down at ride height, not with the wheels hanging down while the vehicle is up on jackstands (this is also true of the LCA bushing the Shock connects to, since you will likely be disconnecting it), as well, you want pre-load on the UCA (like weight is on the vehicle) before tightening the UCA and Shock down... This takes up any slack between the bolts and bolt holes, to what the vehicle was originally aligned to and thus you're alignment will be much closer to what it was before....

Some of these bolts are going to be very, very difficult to torque down with the wheel on and the vehicle at normal ride height. What I did, measured the distance from the wheel well lip to the center of the wheel while the vehicle was on the ground at ride height before the job, wrote the distance down.... ....when it was time to torque those bolts down, I put the floor jack under the wheel hub and raised it till the center of the driveshaft was the same distance to the wheel well lip that I had written down previously..... ....BE VERY CAREFUL, when you do this, it will lift the vehicle off one of the jackstands by an inch or so, so you don't want to get under the car to do any of this while the floor jack has it up off the jackstand a bit...

WK2 Grand Cherokee UCA (Upper Control Arms)

Some Jeepers who have had a lifted Grand Cherokee for awhile and play hard, may have had to change out their upper control arms. Our WK2 Grand Cherokee Control arms are a great alternative. Its also not uncommon for the stock control arms to contact the spring and make a noise during suspension movement, another issue which our WK2 control arms help minimize.

FACT: We use a MOOG Cadillac Escalade Ball Joint. Our competition's ball joints are a 'in-house brand' and can only be purchased from our competitor.. expensive, AND you're screwed if something breaks while you're away from home... or they ever go out of business! Our MOOG Ball Joints can be purchased at any auto parts store, anywhere in the world.
FACT: Our competitor's Ball Joints are not stronger or more durable than the top of the line MOOG Ball Joints in the Rocky Road kit.
FACT: Our kits are manufactured for lifted Jeeps, and allow factory spec alignment as easy, or easier than our competition.

Control arms for Jeep WK2 Grand Cherokee

How does one make sure they're buying the best kit on the market? Well this should end ALL "chat forum" debate over which WK2 control arms are the best in the business....
MOPAR went looking for THE BEST suspension and control arms on the planet for their 'project' Jeeps (these are the Jeeps that show up at popular 4x4 events, Auto industry & trade around the world), and...
MOPAR picked Rocky Road!
MOPAR engineers do not just follow a popular thread on a chat forum, or a couple of "testomonials" from close friends of a 4x4 shop.
MOPAR does not take the word of non-experts.
MOPAR investigates the complete engineering before making any decision... Rocky Road Control Arms were deemed the best engineered by these experts

This ends all online debate. You can't argue Jeep engineering with Jeep engineers, and they chose RRO control arms as the best engineered. When you buy Rocky Road you are buying the best. FACT.

Jeep Grand Cherokee control arms serve the purpose of helping to achieve proper alignment specifications and strut position when a Jeep Grand Cherokee is lifted. The main reason for the upgrade though is that the stock arms can wear out.

The stock Jeep control arms have fixed Tie Rod Ends on them. So WHEN (not if) those wear out, the only fix is to buy all new control arms, and then buy them again, and so on. Rocky Road Control arms are a great alternative. They also provide a little extra clearance for fitting larger tires and keeping the tires off the suspension as well as the control arm from contacting the frame.

Grand Cherokee Control arm kits (and Dodge Durango), WK2.

Kits use factory Jeep rubber bushings for OEM guaranteed durability and impact absorbtion. Should you ever need to replace them, you can pick them up from your local Jeep dealer, or we can supply them for you as well.

Our ball joints are the same as those you find in such premium vehicles as the Cadillac Escalade, and so are more than strong enough for use on the Jeep Grand Cherokee. The radial static load rating on our ball joints is also thousands of lbs stronger than the standard Jeep Grand Cherokee, for a more durable design. The MOOG joints in our kits can also be found around the world in most auto parts stores, and so are an easy exchange when/if the need should ever arise for a replacement.

Please follow our installation instructions and photo details carefully to avoid alignment problems...

Rocky Road Control armshave a lifetime guarantee never to bend or dent. If they do, send it back and we will replace the arm for you.

As a result of the extremely heavy duty .25 wall DOM tubing we use on our arms, damage will never happen, ever. Stronger control arms, you can not find. The mounting plate for the ball joints is equally overkill. You cannot harm these control arms. The ball joints themselves are very easily changed out should the need ever arise for servicing.

Rocky Road control arm kits come with the Extreme Duty ball joints and dust boot, bushings, and hardware. All are powdercoated in a durable tasteful black. The Rocky Road deluxe control armkits offer the very best components on the planet. The Rocky Road control arms are for the Jeeper that wants only the best with the highest standards for quality and performance.

Please note: This control arm kit does require a minimum 2" of lift for proper alignment when installed. To view more information about our suspension lift system for the 2011+ Grand Cherokee, please click

How much does it cost to have an upper control arm replaced?

On average, you can expect a car control arm replacement to cost between $500 and $750. Depending on your vehicle make and model—prices may also vary slightly depending on whether it is a front or rear control arm that needs replacing.

Is it worth replacing control arms?

The most common reason to replace a control arm is to improve wheel travel as part of a suspension lift. However, a new control arm can offer more than just increased ride height (lift) and additional wheel travel: Increased durability in the arm itself. A wider range of uniball/ball joint options.

Should Upper control arms be replaced in pairs?

Ball joints typically cannot be replaced separately, so the entire control arm needs to be replaced. The ball joints are critical to vehicle alignment, so these control arms should also be replaced in pairs. Inspect the ball joint boot and look for signs of dry rotting or cracks, as well as leaking grease.
