The sensor I am referring to is the temperature switch on the front of the engine by the coolant pump on a 4L (1996 XJ). Getting good cranking and no start. -----UPDATE: Resolution was cleaning the air intake
and related after pumping gas pedal to see if would start with brute force ----- Thanks to all those who helped with the diagnostic. Last edited by bpm123; 11-17-2020 at 12:47 PM. Reason: Update on solution 11-13-2020, 11:39 AMCF Veteran

Never heard of that happening with an XJ. Could be the crank sensor, if its old, or it isnt Mopar. Do you hear the fuel pump priming? Whats the fuel pressure? Will it try to start using starting fluid? Does it have spark? Injector pulse? There are lots of reasons it wont start. Any codes? 11-13-2020, 12:03 PM CF Veteran

Crank sensor is a couple years old. Question: Is the RPM gauge is active while the engine is cranking? 11-13-2020, 02:46 PMSeasoned Member

I used to have a 1990 Ranger, that had a no start issue due to bad coolant temp sensor. Not sure if the same issue could affect out Jeeps, but my Ranger was an absolute b***h to start until I replaced the sensor. 11-14-2020, 06:19 AMSenior Member

If i left
the switch "on" by accident and it was cold in the morning the jeep was very difficult to start a hot coolant temp makes the computer lean Thread Thread Starter Forum Last Post lasershark Stock XJ Cherokee Tech. Keeping your engine at the proper temperature is vital to keeping it running correctly. Overheating is usually caused by a problem with the coolant system.
Why is my Jeep Cherokee not starting? The most common reasons a Jeep Cherokee won't start are a dead battery, an alternator problem, or failed starter.
What causes a Jeep Cherokee to overheat? If your Jeep Cherokee is overheating, it's probably a coolant leak. Most of the time, overheating is caused by a leak somewhere in the coolant system, such as in the water pump, radiator, or one of the hoses. If you notice that your coolant fluid is low, this is almost certainly the cause.
How hot is too hot for Jeep Cherokee? You can see the temperature on the dashboard. If the temperature rises above 200 degrees Fahrenheit, the engine could overheat.
