A really fun car

The Tesla 3 I drove was an excellent example of the car. We live in Washington State and soon gas taxes are going to go up and everybody will want an electric. The car I drove was a long range performance model and just flew. I've got a '16 Corvette Z-06 and the Tesla was most likely a match for acceleration. Comfort and handling were just fine. I've read about problems in panel fit but this example had no such problems.

Ford History

It started with an auto race. Young Henry Ford, who had made a number of attempts at starting a car business with such inventions as the Quadricycle, built a 26 horsepower race car he called the Sweepstakes and won a ten-lap race in 1901. Ford took the winnings and started a car company, seeing that the future was in selling cars, not racing them.

By 1908, the Ford Motor Company was on its way, with plants in Michigan and Canada and car sales all the way to Paris, France. Ford also introduced its iconic Model T, which it would continue to manufacture until 1927, making it one of the most successful models of any make in automotive history. Ford trucks soon followed in 1917, coinciding with the opening of Ford's River Rouge plant.

Ford has always been about innovation. So many industry processes we take for granted started with Ford. The integrated moving assembly line was introduced by Ford in 1913, reducing the time it took to build a car from 12 hours to just 90 minutes. Instead of the workers moving to the cars, Ford employees would stay at their stations as the car came to them. Other innovations soon followed, like the first commercially successful V8 gas engine for better performance, soy foam seats for greater comfort, and aluminum truck bodies for light and sturdy construction. Ford even instituted a $5 workday in 1914 (twice what competitors were paying), moving towards such modern concepts as living wages, profit sharing, and better employee motivation and morale.

The company also grew, acquiring the luxury Lincoln Motor Company in 1922 and introducing the Mercury line of middle-priced automobiles in 1938. This placed Ford in a better position to compete against the other industry giant, General Motors, which had started and acquired a number of different brands, each focused on a different market segment. However, just as the competition was heating up, so did the situation in the world with the outbreak of the Second World War. When America called on Ford to help with the war effort, the company stepped up, producing planes, tanks, trucks, and Jeeps for the US military and those of the other Allied Powers. The last civilian passenger car rolled off the River Rouge assembly line in 1941, and it would be four long years before Ford returned to civilian auto production.

After World War II, Ford shifted to the production of consumer vehicles like the F-Series pickup truck, the Thunderbird sports car, and the Mustang muscle car. The F-Series pickup quickly became the benchmark by which all other pickup trucks were judged. As for the Thunderbird and Mustang, they would become icons immortalized in songs by such artists as the Beach Boys and Wilson Pickett. These Ford cars from the '50s and '60s are now sought-after collector's items. In 1990, Ford would help launch the ongoing love affair between Americans and SUVs with models such as the Explorer and the Bronco.

Throughout this time, Ford showed its dedication to passenger safety. In 1954, Ford began crash testing its cars long before any Federal mandates. The company followed this up in 1970 by making three-point self-retracting and adjusting safety belts standard on its cars.
