Out of all the pie recipes there are to make for Thanksgiving dessert a sweet potato pie probably isn't the first thing that comes to mind. I know it's not the first one that I think of anyway. But, this old fashioned sweet potato pie recipe just might change all of that.

Seriously, it's so good.

Now, if you've never had a grandma southern old fashioned sweet potato pie before it's very similar to a classic pumpkin pie. It's got all of the same delicious notes and spices that pumpkin pie has.

However, the texture of sweet potato pie is really what sets it apart. The sweet potato filling is silky smooth and perfectly thick, and it melts in your mouth with each and every bite.

And what I love about this recipe, besides how delicious it is, is that the pie is surprisingly easy to make. It's one of the easier pie recipes you'll find.

In fact, just 3 main steps are all you need to follow to make it. Yup, that's it!

By the way, if you're looking for another change-up from a traditional pumpkin pie, this pumpkin custard pie is a hit, and you have to give it a try!

Anyway, now let's get into the ingredients you'll need to make this grandma sweet potato pie recipe.

Ingredients

The ingredients you need to make this southern sweet potato pie are all pretty common ones. And if you don't have them at home, they should be easy to find at your local grocery store.

Anyway, here's what you'll need to make this grandma old fashioned sweet potato pie:

  • 1 (9 inch) Pie Crust
  • 2 cups Sweet Potatoes, cooked and diced (fresh or frozen)
  • ¾ cup Brown Sugar
  • 8 tbsps. Unsalted Butter, melted
  • 2 Eggs
  • ½ cup Evaporated Milk
  • 1 tbsp. All-Purpose Flour
  • 1 tbsp. Vanilla Extract
  • 1 tsp. Cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp. Nutmeg
  • ¼ tsp. Ground Ginger
  • ¼ tsp. Salt
  • Whipped Cream to serve

Now, to make this recipe quick, easy, and fool-proof, I like to use a premade pie crust. It guarantees the best results and just makes this recipe so much easier to make. But if you want to use a homemade pie crust, feel free to whip one up and use it for this recipe!

As for the sweet potatoes, feel free to use already frozen sweet potatoes instead of fresh sweet potatoes. All you'll have to do is heat them up to cook them, and it will make the cooking process much quicker as well.

By the way, if you're grabbing sweet potatoes from the store, grab a few extra. They make a great side for things like these BBQ chicken sliders and breaded chicken cutlets.

And you can use them to make some more delicious sweet potato recipes like this delicious sweet potato cobbler, sweet potato cornbread, sweet potato muffins, or sweet potato pound cake!

How to Store Sweet Potato Pie

If your serving this for Thanksgiving - or another gathering with a group of people - you probably won't have any of this homemade sweet potato pie left.

But, if you do, this pie is delicious stored and reheated.

To store, wait until the pie cools completely and then either transfer the slices to an airtight container or wrap the pie dish tightly in plastic wrap and store it in the fridge. Stored this way it will last for up to 4 days.

However, if you want to keep this pie for longer, you can freeze it for up to 3 months. To freeze sweet potato pie, first, wrap the cooled pie slices individually in plastic wrap, and then wrap them in aluminum foil, or put them in an airtight freezer-safe container and freeze.

How To Reheat Sweet Potato Pie

You can reheat this southern sweet potato pie super easily.

If it's thawed, put the pie slices on a baking sheet, cover the edges of the crust with aluminum foil, and heat in the oven at 300°F for about 15 minutes or until warm.

With that said, if you're reheating the pie from a frozen state you'll want to heat in the oven at 300°F for about 40 minutes - or until warm.
