INTERNAL MEDICINE RESIDENCY PROGRAM

Program Overview

Welcome

The Internal Medicine Residency Program at San Joaquin General Hospital, a county institution, has been in existence since 1932. Our Program is small and vibrant, geared towards hands-on clinical training. Without any competing fellowship programs, the residents receive a very comprehensive and balanced education in the ambulatory and inpatient areas of General Internal Medicine. Our Program is structured to provide a broad clinical experience, enabling the resident physician to become a clinically competent and caring internist.

Under the guidance of our energetic full-time faculty physicians, our residents assume great graduated responsibility. During inpatient rotations, they are the first contact to evaluate, formulate a plan of care, and manage patients from admission to discharge. Throughout the three years of their training, the residents complete a minimum of 130 comprehensive faculty- supervised Continuity Clinics in addition to many sub-specialty electives. The University Of California campuses at San Francisco and Davis participate with our training program in providing didactics, teaching and management rounds in addition to furnishing the residents with several elective rotations. Our agreement with Stanford University to provide comprehensive stroke management was finalized in the Spring of 2018. Furthermore, ambulatory rotations at the local Kaiser Permanente in Stockton adds to the diversity of training.

We are committed to training physicians who are well-prepared to practice in a wide range of settings. We have proudly enjoyed a 100% ABIM pass rate for the past five consecutive years. Upon graduation, many of our residents have chosen to work as hospitalists or as primary care internists in Northern California. A sizable number of graduates have also been accepted into fellowships in the specialties of Pulmonary/Critical Care, Nephrology, Rheumatology,Hematology/Oncology, and Infectious Diseases.

The Residency Program has always fostered the concept of education in new arenas. We launched our Simulation Lab using mannequins for a variety of case scenarios and training in bedside ultrasonography utilizing the concept of “goal-directed ultrasound imaging.”

Our Program is dedicated to healing, caring, and teaching. We thrive in providing the best place to work and best place to learn.
